4 days ago i bought my first e30, a 325 (327 conv) from a mate who also posts on this site, didnt have any problems untill last night....

Image

Stoped at a traffic lights on a duel carriage way i was in the outside lane, a bmw x5 beside me, and a blue corsa behind me. The road was wet as it had be raining quite hard before. lights went green i pulled away not putting my foot down, corsa was right up my arse i put my foot down as i was to close to the x5 to pull over the the left hand lane. the corsa went to undertake me and clipped my rear passenge side and sped off as i'd put my foot down at basically the same time hed done this the back end just went i put my foot on the brakes x5 shot past me, car starting fishtailing next thing i know the front end had hit hte metal barrier of the central reservation and then rear span round and smashed into it too... blue corsa no where to be seen and the x5 was miles away. I'm left with a hefty repair bill.

I've only ever driven slow cars before and dont know how to control it when the back end comes out like that, most probaly wouldnt have happend in the dry but still it defintly wouldnt have happend if the corsa handt of clipped me. just spent an extortionate amount on insurance yet i cant claim, only third party, fire and theft. didnt get the plates of any of the cars wasnt on my mind at the time. I'M UNBELIEVABLY ANNOYED!!!

Feel for you mate, had my first experience of fishtailing the night i got my 325i.Only unlike you i was booting it a bit and only spun off dual carriageway and did,nt hit anyone else.Taught me a bloody good lesson though. Now treat mine with respect in the wet. And sometimes in the dry. :o:

Whenever I get a new car (especially with RWD and BMW) I take it to the industrial estate at night and get used to the car and how to recover when the back goes.

One of my mates bought a TVR, I tried telling him to have a play to find limits and get used to recovering it. He didn't and I was two cars behind him when he lost the back end at left the car 90 degrees across the road. Fortunately The guy behind had enough room to avoid him!

Sorry to hear about the damage, but good to hear you're going to put it right. With insurance now, there is minimal difference between TPFT and fully comp, as most of the expense comes from people claiming injuries.

Poxy corsas-I had one (many moons ago before all the chavs!) total bag of sh1te.

As for car control.....
Try and avoid jumping on the brakes when the back steps out-you transfer the weight to the front that way and it makes matters worse(as you found out  )
Get yourself on a airfield based trackday when its fixed and try provoking it,you will soon suss it. Its easier to rescue a slide in a rear drive car than front drive, the only way to rescue them is to keep your foot in-not allways handy!( I learnt that the hard way after years of racing karts and other rear drive things)

Good luck fixing it!

Just a thought, but if you were at traffic lights, were there not any camera's about? i mean observation ones that feel like big brother is watching? If there're are - maybe they caught the Corsa? so to speak?

316 = 1800cc, wet juction, saw a gap in traffic, nailed it and whoops. I was a lot younger ie 21 and it was a long time ago, im a bit better now, I hope. The wet karting helps.

Oh no! Man thats and awful thing to happen. E30's can be a biut of a handful in the wet and its a very easy thing to happen. I really hope that you get it fixed. Looks a lovely car too. :(

Keep it away from insurance. They will definitely write it off, and pay you book = peanuts.

If it snows dont take your car out. You may practice and think your pretty handy behind the wheel but imagine how many muppets out there who dont take the effort to learn.

snowing, ice on the road, traffic lights ahead, you brake, control a slide, reduce your speed and stop. Muppet behind hits the brakes, locks up all 4 whels and waits to hit something.

Not for me, especialy with the amount of salt on the roads

if you lose control and the car is sliding on its brakes in snow just take the brakes of and let the car stop naturally

Yeah I know what you mean mate. But fun wise I meant generally - still haven't mastered rear wheel drive fun properly in the dry even. Literally can't afford to take the risk on snow or ice. I've been driving reletively patiently for 5 years to get rid of a write off on my license. Don't fancy another one after all this time.

as you did not get the details of any of the other cars involved or witnesses you can't puruse a claim through the MIB www.mib.org.uk under the uninsured driver agreement.

If you reported it to plod promptly and suffered any injury, then you could pursue a claim through the MIB Untraced Driver Agreement. Subject to them being satisfied with the circumstances of the accident.

So in that case you would get a payout for injuries, which would help to dampen down the pain of the repair costs, but it will take about 9-12 months for the claim to be sorted.

food for thought anyway, but you can only make a claim if 1) you reported it to plod within a few days and also 2) if you suffered injury - (get yourself to the docs)
