how it compares to a race S14 - as already said its a smaller bore engine so better suited to the 2l requirements in touring cars of the mid nineties, the S14 was really oversquare in 2l form with its big pistons whereas the S42 was nearly square. The S42 obviously as a result also had a more compact head and better valve size for the capacity. The S42 was both lighter and more powerful than the S14 as a 2l. some of the funkiest bits were that some revved to 9k+rpm, had ridiculous transmission whine etc.
Specs:
cam specs - varied, but an example is 312/304
CR circa 13:1 - again varied
valves 35/35
slide throttles 46/48.

Hi Andy,Andyboy wrote: As for unichipping a 3.8 M5 - well, it's your money. BMW and Bosch clearly don't know very much. My old man (AmD) had a lowish opinion of Unichip but thinks highly of MegaSquirt as an inexpensve and pretty elegant little system that works well. God, 10 years ago he was fitting air mass meters to Motronic 911's without recourse to some plastic thing taped to the ECU!
It's strange that AMD were the only company that I demo'd the Unichip to that never took it on board (now standing at over 100 dealers in the UK), but then funnily enough developed their own inferior version called the 'chipstar' strange that isn't it
The Unichip is the most popular Piggy Back ECU in the world, as well as being used by several works motorsport teams as well as manufacturers, would suggest that it's slightly better than you are making out
Could you also tell me what it is that you can adjust to make the power that the Unichip can't? Also can your eprom Emulator 'live map' the system, by this I mean hold it at a certain engine speed & load site, & adjust the parameters to see what it is that the engine actually want's/needs to give it best power?
I await your response.
Cheers,
Gerry

But of course, any rival product would be 'inferior' to yours - wouldn't it?!
I'm assuming the original Unichip from 10 years ago (which works EXTREMELY well on Ford EEC) is the same as the one currently available? I can remember seeing a 2 litre Mondeo being Unichipped at a dyno in Bristol after it had been fitted with a pair of cams and it had very good results. It was the follow up from a Fast Ford magazine competition and I think you may have been there fitting it!
Seriously - I'd love to know which manuafacturer/production car uses a Unichip with it's Bosch/Siemens/Hiatchi etc etc engine management system.
As for live mapping, I wasn't aware that it was an essential prerequisite to have a piggyback ECU of any sort to live map Motronic. You live and learn!
