My comment was aimed at the people using this thread to have digs at each other like kids in a school yard! It was not aimed at the those that were making comments 'on topic'

Ԛ£275? That was deep thoat AND anal. I bet that hurt.
Dirty robbing bastard.
The M50 2.5 conversion is really a waste of time and effort. If you don't mind pissing about lying under a car in the rain and losing most of your knuckle skin for 20 bhp, go ahead. Those who have built them (Parkside for example) wouldn't do it again unless a 2.8 was involved. The only reason they did it was because they had a really nice 2 door shell and a good 24v engine. As a swap to gain 20 bhp you're pissing in the wind unless you're a masochist.
I Think I'll spend a weekend slipping a 284 cam and an Ant chip in for 192 bhp ( and more torque) thanks.............

ive said my bit, all's i said the m50 conversion CAN be done for Ԛ£500! dont forget that there are a lot of ebay losers who will buy a 318i engine and box to re-coop some money! anyway forget it, you'll all stick together as many of us know who you are so whats the point! i made mine and i stick by it, IT CAN BE DONE. bodge or not, just depends on your limits and some people seem to think you have to spend thousands to do it "right"
what a load off toshack, its just knowing the right people
anyway back to topic! 3.5 it mate,

I was thinking more along the lines of 3.0 litres in M54 form though

Fair point - I was thinking along the lines of converting an existing 325i.
But wouldn't have been easier to just sell the 318i and buy a 325i? But, if you like messing about with engine swaps (some do!) then I can't fault you.

318i's are more a plenty and there's always a cheap one about with an engine that sounds like a food blender
I bought a 325i from the scrap yard, paid half with a mate who wanted the engine and box so plenty of bits for it. Intended to strip the suspension and re-bush everything anyways
I do like messing about with cars, id rather be outside doing something car related than decorating for example.
On topic, if youve got some bits about allready then just build a good 2.7, I doubt you will regrett it

I've done an M50 conversion easily for less than Ԛ£500 - including buying the recipient E30 touring, M50B25Tu engine and box, diff, electric fan, engine mounts, exhaust, air filter and everything else - and that's before selling off any left over bits.TW166Y wrote:ive said my bit, all's i said the m50 conversion CAN be done for Ԛ£500!
The M50 2.5 conversion is well worth doing - changing an ancient design of engine like an M20 for something much more sophisticated and fuel efficient that doesn't constantly leak oil.
192 BHP is quite sufficient to make the E30 into quite a useful road car. We're not all boy racers!"
Currently collecting the bits for another one, which will be cheaper still.
Already have another 2.5 engine and box, but if a 2.8 comes my way in the meantime, at my kind of price, then I shan't turn it down.

If i want a fast car i buy one, end of. I am not into butchering and molesting. I have just bought a fairly tidy good spec 320 touring for Ԛ£200 , it has a snapped manifold stud and god knows when the cambelt was changed, if / when it expires rather than waste money on a boat anchor i will probably build up an el cheapo 2.7, it will cost me not a lot except some time , it will look factory and there will be no guess work involved partswise.More importantly the performance will be similar to a car with a M50 2.5.
Contrary to popular belief the M50 engine is hardly a model citizen, cracked heads, dodgy coil packs, fried ecu's , plastic waterpumps, moody cam sensors etc. If i was doing an engine swap on an e30 i would do an M30 3.5, the engine is bomb proof, simple, the conversion is very well documented and you have good torque and power from minute one. The m50 is a good enine but the gains are nor significant enough to make the aggro worthwhile. Obviously a breathed on m52 2.8 is a much better bet but it is NOT a budget conversion and a boggo 3.5 will still kick its ass !
P.S lets see some of you heroes at santa pod on saturday , i looking forward to seeing some dreams ruined and conrods exiting engine blocks !

Right.. So If i build the 2.7 it's a better option than the 335.m50??
Think I'll jeep the 2.7 and build it up over time.
