When I wire-in my 7N socket, does it have to be connected ahead of the bulb failure relay?
Or, put another way.... Is there a particular place to connect it so it doesn't make the check panel think there's a fault?

Yes, connect the relevant wires (brakes and sidelamps) at the input side plug of the bulb module,
