Hi all, ok, what i would like to know is when building an engine how many miles do you have to run the engine in and at what stage of milleage do i do an engine oil change??

Also..... The Fse power boost valve... are they any good and how much bar can i push into the injectors before leakage.. basically whats a good bar to set it at...???

you would have alight map up to 4k for about 1000 miles then a full map but as ant says M20s S14s etc arent run in till 10k miles plus.

Maxfield thanks for your reply, not being abscent minded, but do u mean 4k as i have to be in the region of 4000 rpms? if so cruising at what speed, like each gearing 1,2,3,4,5 what rpms should i take the car in to for each gear if you can confirm to rest my sole without blowing any bottom ends, sole has rested.

Stupid question.... but couldnt i just start the car and keep it running for say an hour a day?? for a month or so rather then driving it?...does that make sense? as i have a company car also which i use alot regards to free diesel.

Kind Regards

imho should change oil @ 150 as thats when most of the runnining ware will occur then again @1000miles u cant run an engine in just on tick over as it needs the load of driving to ware all the new components in
Injections nice....but I'd rather be blown ;)

and run it in for first 150miles on the cheapest oil you can find, run it, drain it and fill with better stuff, drive conservatively and do not drive at constant speeds, i.e accellerate slowly then slow down each time upto 3-4k. this is why idleing does not run in properly.

No, no and no!

You need to get the engine up to temperature.

Then you need to go to a quite stretch of dual carriage way.

Then you need to get to about 50mph, select 4th gear and then floor the accelerator up to 70mph.

Then you leave it in gear and take your foot all the way off the gas until the speed drops UNDER ENGINE BRAKING to 50mph again.

Then you repeat the cycle of flooring it to 70 and engine braking back to 50 a few times.

Once that's done, your engine's run in!

If you don't do that your engine will never be run in!

The point of this process is to build high pressures in the cylinders so that the rings seat properly, without going to high revs. The point of the engine braking is to suck oil up from the sump to lubricate the bores ready for the next seating phase.

As said, use the cheapest shitty oil you can find, not synthetic as it lubricates too well to allow the rings to seat and seal in the bores.

Change the oil for more cheap stuff after about 20 miles as there will be all manor of shit in it by then!

Don't ever just start a newly built engine for anything other than the warm up phase and leak checking. It glazes the bores and then that's it, you've had your chance to run it in as the rings will never seal!

Engine's not being run in untill 100K is just a figure of speech and is to be ignored. You engine is either run in within the first 100miles, or it's never run in.

Second to last, forget about the power boost valve. The ECU is mapped properly from the factory and is certainly all you need for running in!

Lastly, definately forget about upping the fuel pressure! You're not adding more air to the engine so you don't need more fuel!

In your original post, you mentioned turning the fuel pressure up. Why do you want to do that?

The Alpina 2.7s etc ran fine with the standard FPR and fuel pressure did they not?

No, no and no!

Eh? looks to me like you said exactly what I said
do not drive at constant speeds, i.e accellerate slowly then slow down each time upto 3-4k.
There have been several threads on the FSE ''boost'' valves and all seemed to be of the opinion that they are not much more than a fire hazzard. your fuel pressure will be fine.

 pretty much, except the bit about accelerating slowly :)
