:D Very good!!

Well it's valued at Ԛ£82'000 (paid for, no mortgage) so does that mean I get two garages? Tell you what, I'll let you supply the materials and I'll pay you more than Phil! Sound fair?? winkeye

If i gave u slap a few times u might come round and fit a 2.8 instead if your going to all the aggro of bodging an M50 in. but i suppose u can't do that for a monkey! lol

can u take tiggers place as zone plank, i think your nearly there anyway :?
I just read the hole of this thread, i know im new on here and dont post much, so i dont really have the right to say anything. But its the comments to people like the one above that puts me off this place. All Twiggy was doing was putting his point across. So really Simon there was no need to say what you did about the bloke. I find this sort of thing out of order and there is no need for it. As for Steve being a plank, if you have met the bloke you will know his far from it. Same gose for Twiggy. But i bet you havent met eather of them in person. So really you should keep your nasty comments to your self. Now on the other hand, ive met you and TBH i thought you were the biggest plank out of the hole bunch of Zoners that were there. I did think you were ok, but then the worst thing happend, you opened your mouth. But i can say that cause ive met you.

As for not being able to do a M50 for Ԛ£500. Yes you can, and some one said you cant get a good E30 for Ԛ£500. Same again, yes you can. If you have your fingers in the right pie,s

Now back on to the topic in hand. I think you should go down the 2.7 route
the 3.5 is good but more of a head ache than the 2.7

My conclusion is this:

If you like pissing about and building engines in lock ups then do a cheap 2.7. They drive okay and have a nice bit of extra grunt over a 2.5. What i did with both of my 2.7's was to build up a complete 320i or 325i head and then do the head swap with the 2.7 engine still in the 525e. You can then drive the car about for a bit before pulling it out, steaming it off and fitting the E30 sump.

If you don't want to build an engine and want something easy, do a 3.5. You WILL find a 535i or 735i manual on Ebay with a decent engine but with the engine out on the floor it would make sense to pull the head off, get it skimmed, new gasket etc. Because it uses the same style of Motronic to a plakky bumper E30 it's a piece of piss to plug the loom in and get it going. It's possible to modify an M20 loom to fit an M30 as well. The mounts are cheap enough (Ԛ£150 ish). To be honest I'd rather do this than use an M50 - you can't beat an extra 1000 cc. Make that an :)

Anyone who thinks a 24v engine doesn't have much low down grunt hasn't driven a 330i. winkeye

Simon im not saying about the F this and the F that. All im saying is if you didnt say what you did in the 1st place, you would,nt have got someone,s back up. Then maybe they would,nt have repliyed to you the way you did.

As for Twiggy starting it, you might want to go back and read it again cause all he said was

Then you went on to calling him a loser, and to giving him a few slaps, to calling him the new Zone plank.

Come on Simon you got to admit, that was a bit harsh for someone having there view on something you said. Put the shoe on the other foot, if someone started calling you them things, im 95% sure that you would,nt be to happy about it. I know i would,nt.

Anyway at the end of the day this is not our Thread, some person has started this for people,s views on the 2.7 or 3.5 so can we not hijack this Thread any longer. Or there is gonna be someone else unhappy on here cause there Thread has been locked because of people bitching at each other.

So i think :) You have got to love the extra torque that another 800cc gives you, I think as said its not too hard to get an actual 230bhp out of them too.

I love reading the banter, especially when the guys eventually meet, and then kiss and make up. So sweet :gay:

LOl just read this over agian, fucking comedy thread!
Simon13 wrote:the car was the suspension and exhaust manifold was not the best.

M20 is better low down revs, more torque. M50 is better top end.
Why because 2valve technology is in fact better than 4 valve below 4000rpm. only above this does a 4valve engine strut it's stuff.
Dude im sorry but i cant believe that. If its so true then why are 95% of cars produced today whether it be a hyundai a honda or a lamba or a supercar, all use 4 valve per cylinder dual cam technology? dual valves actually flow better at lower lift than a single valve does so i dont no where you got that from. Also, if single valve technology is so good for low down torque etc, why isnt it used on any of BMW's engines after the m20? millions of pounds of reserach obviosuly tought them something did it not? i mean there are dual valve engines out there that will piss over an m20s torque figures at low revs imo!

So whats the bottom line on a budget 2.7 build, seems like a good thread to have it down in writing. I've heard conflicting opinions on what combination of parts to use.

Just build a bloody 2.7 like we (most have) this way at least we feel closer the the C2 alpina, but the poor mans DIY version... :D :D and works well... i love it so...... again with the icons....

for those with the 2.7 build click icon

then we have agreed whats the best way...
my first 2.7 build was with pre 1985 eta pistons but got the urge and greedy for speed before bedding 500 miles on the bloock and blew the bottom end.
my second 2.7 build was using 325 pistons and 325 conrods, this way the pistons were a few mill above block level with it was so close to valves it just missed it by a few mill also. as i done a mock build to check for clearance lots of torque.
my third build (currently on going) is the same as first but taking it easy this time to bed in pistons with a nice juicy comp ratio of 11:1 and cant F-----g wait man....

good luck

Like i said Ԛ£500 wont even buy you a decent E30.

So you stuck a M50 into a 318i.

How much did it cost you for the prop? How much did it cost you for the rear disk conversion? How much did it cost you for the exhaust manifold/exhaust? how much did it cost you for the engine arms? how much did it cost you for the engine mounts? how much did it cost you for the rad? how much did it cost you for the electric fan? how much did it cost you for the engineers report? How much did it cost you for the brake servo mod? How much did it cost you for the insurance? ETC

If your banking on your scratch cards coming in this week then forget it. A proper conversion costs proper money. Yeah sure you can buy scrap and thatâ┚¬Ã¢”ž¢s all it will be worth scrap!

So many dreamers on here!

Prop is a 325 item - from a breaker that owes me about Ԛ£50
Front/rear discs/325 suspension - same breaker
Manifolds cost me Ԛ£50
New frontpipe cost me Ԛ£30 (could of used a free one)
Scorpion middle box - Ԛ£50
Scorpion back box - Ԛ£45 (later sold the link pipes for Ԛ£40) = Ԛ£5
Engine arms - Ԛ£10
Mounts - Ԛ£45 ish
Rad - above breaker
Fan - Ԛ£5
Servo/master cylinder - Ԛ£20

Insurance is irrelevant
What it is or what it will be worth is irrelevant (to me anyway)

I didnt dream this up andrew, its real, I drive it everyday

The only reason I posted is because of the opinions that an M50 conversion has to have a load of money thrown at it to be any good.
I havnt thrown money at mine and its a good conversion.

Thats Ԛ£265 with no suspention or engine/gearbox included. So the rest of the Ԛ£500 went on the diff/gaskets and service parts.

Twiggy expects to do all this for less than Ԛ£500

its not ignorance but experience. There are so many bodges around which are just a joke.

Then you have people saying you can do a M50 conversion for Ԛ£500.

I know from experience that its not that easy
Yeah sure anyone can say it cost me Ԛ£500
"my mate was throwing a E34 525i away so i took it off him
my other mate was breaking a E30M3 and didnt know how much
a prop was worth so i took him a 24can box off stella as it was on
special at tescos during the world cup.
this other guy who i know through my grans dogs vet let me borrow his drive
for three weeks while my car was off the road.
another lad who happened to be walking past seen i was lifting the old M40
out the car with my next doot neighbour bit by bit and said i have a
engine crane you can borrow.
then when my mates mate who works at ECP heard what i was doing gave me
40% off trade for a new water pump and sump gasket (cause thats what a 168 thousand
mile M50 needs to make mint)
when i realised i needed to fix the brakes on ebay i found a master cylinder off a mark I
golf GTI for a fiver including postage, only because the guy selling it put Golf master cylinder
on the advert (stupid clown)
I had a result with the electric fan and rad off a 7shitter in the scrap yeard
after all that i only spent Ԛ£20 on fuel getting about cause my mates drove me about
for weeks as my car was off the road (they didnt mind as i said i would take them for a drive once its done)
but seven weeks have gone past and i still dont have a diff as my mates M3 one was shagged
so i had to suck pacerpete off as he had a good one for Ԛ£250
so there you have it a full M50 conversion for the price of a weekend in Butlins (i know what i would rather do)
