Hi,
I enquired regarding a cage for my E30 325i from Safety Devices and got this responce back from them updating me with what was happening with their company.
Interesting and Posiitive actions in my opinion...
Hi Ian
Thank you very much for your email and your interest in our products.
You may have heard that Safety Devices Ltd has restructured and has now become Safety Devices International Ltd. The new company will continue to manufacture and market most of the roll-cage and roof rack product range of Safety Devices Ltd.
A vital part of the restructuring program is to improve the service and support we offer to you, our customer. Because our sales team is unable to effectively deal with the high volume of correspondence and queries, we aim to make better use of the experience of our dealer and distributor network.
We therefore have decided to exclusively sell our products through our dealers and distributors. The benefit for you is that you deal directly with a specialist who has detailed knowledge about fitting roll cages and/ or roof racks to your particular vehicle.
The distributor listing on the website will shortly be updated with the latest information and we would like to ask you to check for your nearest dealer and contact them direct. If you are unable to locate a suitable dealer in your area, please contact us again to assist you in directing you to a specialist.
Our main manufacturing plant is in the final stages of its relocation program and full production will restart shortly. However expect a slight delay in availability for items that are not in stock with our dealers.
Please check our website every so often as new information will be posted as soon as it becomes available.
Again thank you for contacting Safety Devices International Ltd.
The Safety Devices Int'l sales team.

The main manufacturing plant has been relocated to Poland!agent006 wrote:Well at least it cuts down my choice of cage by 1 manufacturer. Moving production to cut costs doesn't generally mean that the quality stays.
I have direct information about Safety Devices.
Both my Dad (Project Manager/CAD Designer) & Brother (Apprentice welder & fabricatior) worked for them until they went into receivership earlier this year as the owner and his wife totally buggered everything up, (they even had their own house up as collateral!). They wouldn't go into new avenues and wouldn't move from Landrover accessories.
It all went pop, many people were made redundant, pissed off customers etc etc.
Production is now in Poland as labour is cheap.
I have seen the welding etc on the cages from Poland and the quality is sooooo poor against Safety Devices cages of years past.
Player6 (Scott) has one of the last 'proper' safety devices cages to put in his car.
If you have any Q's guys feel free to pm me.
I hope that this has shed some light on the subject.

Hi
The quality of the cages SafetyDevices are producing is very good quality..and the construction is also very good.
When compared with other production options it is more substantial hence the cost being higher than OMP and Sparco
The dealers are listed on the safetydevices website and the E30 cages dealer is in Hertfordshire and will have cages in stock..they also supply OMP, Sparco and Custom Cages
Problem is the cost of labour in this country is high and this does not always mean the quality follows, in Poland labour is cheaper and in this case the quality is good...so you can trust these cages..as do competitors in RWD challenge and other race series

cant answer your Q re approval but aware many of the cages have homologationa and FIA approval...if there were any issues scruitineers would pick it up
Told recently of an E30 crash where the car was a ball but the SD cage remained intact and the driver walked away...thats all you can ask

My point was more to that fact that SD is now a new company. SD limited - SD international limited
So is it the design that the FIA homogalate or the production. ie could I start producing a cage to SD design and would that be homogilated???
Or do SD International need it to be rehomogalated? Scrutineering is a bit late for someone to find out their cage is no good ;)
Only curious, I have a CC one so doesn't effect me, just wouldn't like someone else to get stung

As far as I know the company has to pay for homologation and it gets checked by FIA/RAC etc...you would need to ask SD but guess the new company would also own the rights to the cages and therefore any certification.
Accept what you say and CC make full international spec cages BUT and its is surely a big BUT with a weld in cage like yours is likely to be it will depends greatly on who has fitted it.
OMP and Sparco do bolt in cages as do SD so likelyhood of poor welds are less drastic if welds are poor.
Saying that even on the OMP 10 point bolt in cage for the E30 a fair amount of welding is required for brackets etc, and to a lesser extent the SD cage foor mounts. SD do two 6 point bolt in cages supplied by AutomacGB, and a multi point cage B006 that is supplied by PowerDevelopments. OMP and Sparco do 6 point and multipoint cages supplied by many suppliers.
BMW CarClub members get discounts on E30 cages (safetydevices, OMP or Sparco and Custom Cages)

I do have an interest as the company I work for supply all these cages and offer the discount but didnt want to use the forum for self promotion...but you asked the question

Whats your company called??
Maybe worth getting involved with PBMW if you can supplied discounted cages, I know theres quite a few cars in build for 2007 at the moment
My cage was installed professionally so not worried about the quality of the welds, Dave Kear @ M Tech looks after my car and he's done many CC cages ;)

Not sure on the admins' point of view, but i don't mind the occasional bit of self promotion. Not too keen on the sort that post one blatant ad and are never seen again but you seem to have good advice to give.cabrio wrote:Not sure if right to promote on here but you asked I didnt force it on anyone...cheers
My point before was that it all seemed a bit "smoke and mirrors" with you hinting that people might like to buy stuff from automac. Much better to know we've got someone posting here who knows their stuff etc.
All good by me.
Thanks
How was your Audi..have been offered an Audi Quattro cheap that we are considering stripping out and using as a rallyschool car...anything apart from obvious to look for, so cheap will accept it will need a turbo etc
Cheers

Most of my knowledge is on teh turboed stuff.
Have a read of this:

Again, aimed at the turbo models but a lot of the general stuff still applies. Nothing really unusual about the regular quattros, just the usual stuff when buying any car.
