Preventing rack damage

Had a recon'd PAS rack fitted 7 months ago (with a 6 month guarantee !) and yesterday the PAS went AWOL suddenly.

Just had a quick look expecting to find no fluid or no belt but both are present and correct. Raised the front end to bleed the system but the fluid level didn't fall enough to warrant topping up.

The pump isn't making any noises at all, not even on full lock but after bleeding the PAS returned for a few seconds (enough to get out of the car park) but disappeared again straight away.

Obviously there's something wrong with the pump or rack which is going to take some investigating but in the meantime, and assuming its the pump, how can I ensure that I don't damage the new rack ?

Sounds like its the pump?
To avoid damage,best replace sooner rather than later!

Suppose it could be faulty rack though?

Just been out for a drive and there's deffinately some activity from the pump, just not much and a kind of cuts in and out. Got to be the pump but I won't be able to get one for a few weeks so I figure its worth draining the fluid out to save the rack

this is sort of on the same lines, my rack used to squeal louder than an angry pig and when i changed the fluid for some slick 50 stuff it quietened right down. dunno if thats of any use to anybody but thought i'd give it a mention.
