Id say it is something to do with this plug/wires which went to the original auto selector/gear lever!

Wires are

Yellow/Green
Black/Green
Blue/White

You need to connect the green/yellow to the green/white. This connection is normally made inside the gear selector when in park. It basically switches 12v from fuse 10 to the start inhibit relay. Without this, it will never crank.

The blue/white wire is for the reverse lights.

Ivw just done this conversion this weekend on my 1986 cabby. Under the glovebox there are 2 black wires both with yellow stripes with a connector in the middle, unplug the connector and swap the wires over. This bypasses the inhibitor switch. hope this helps
