Yeah, hotwire is a MAF, I think the e36 323i is the fav to raid these from.
Siemens Mass Air Flow sensor from a 323i with:
BMW Part Number = 13621703275
Siemens Part Number = 5WK9600

That's right. There is a heated wire which senses the airflow cooling it.
I've heard mention of it and a few Zone members underbonnet piccies with one fitted.
What does the conversion consist of and a rough idea on price.

you'll need the MAF itself and something to convert the signal for the motronic to understand, choices are something like apexi super afc or ( and better imho) use a Dastek unichip and get it converted and mapped professionally.
not cheap though ! c Ԛ£700 fitted and mapped
have you considered an aftermarket ECU setup, no AFM or MAF, there are some excellent units out there, I've just bought the megasquirt setup for mine
othere include the superb emerald setup.
what is you ultimate goal, eveolve the engine and mod til you drop , or just better response and some extra BHP as a one time thing ??

Thanks for the feedback Ant.
I'm looking to properly set the engine up. I am dissapointed with the result from Bexley, as i have had to change the ECU with Bexley's chip in it for a standard 325 ECU just to get me by until i swap chips over (idle air control fault). To be honest i cannot tell the difference between the 2 ECU's.
Have i been conned?
I've got an Emerald ECU for the Taz racer and have been keen to build a Megasquirt ECU for a couple of years now. Lack of time though hence my infrequent visits to the 'Zone'.
I'd be interested to hear how you get on with your project.
Have you heard of the self mapping ECU just come out. Can't remember who makes it.

yeah, cant remember either.
the megasquirt can be run in fully closed loop mode and will in essence/laymans map itself for fuelling but only in conjuction with a wide band 02 sensor, this would only suffice to give a base map and does not allow for accel and decel load etc etc.
with regard to the MS, you can order it pre assembled ,tested and working, cost more but takes all the risk out
whatever ECU you choose the secrets in the mapping, the resolotion of the map ie 8x8, 16x16 etc can drasticly affect the outcome.
rest assufred once I've done the swop a full report will be posted,
BTW, I am using the stock motroic to run the sparks, MS is gonna control the fuelling, might upgrade to "full" MS once I've decided which of the various upgrades would work best on the M20
