Hi
I currently own a 316 and I had a good deal for some shocks but they are from a 325.
I now that the 325 units are 51mm and mine suposedly would be 45mm but I measured the strut housing and it is larger than 51mm (on the outside)
What I would like to know is are the two strut housings equal in diameter or was mine supose to be smaller?

Is it a saloon or a touring? Saloons are supposed to have different sizes. I think all tourings have the larger size.

All cars fitted with M-tec suspension (optional extra on a 316i, but quite popular on coupes)have the 51mm dia tube.As you say the standard gear was 45mm.Sounds like your motor may have the M-tec suspension if you quote the chassis no. to your nearest BMW main dealer he will be able to tell you which system was fitted at the factory.
If it ain't broke..
Fix it till it is :)

or somebaody may have fitted the thicker struts to your car at some point! I know I have fitted thicker struts to 2 316i/318s....

Just to note the 325i springs won't work very well with a 4 cyclinder engine...

I'm just fitting the shocks.
They are standard items but recharged with extra load ;)
But if the tube in the outside is around 53mm then the shocks will be the 51mm ones or is the tube the same for the 45mm?
That is my real doubt

Both sizes of struts are made from the same thickness of material, so if yours are 53 on the outside they will be 51 on the inside, if they are 47 on the outside they will be 45 on the inside
