When the BMW official nomenclature is 'Convertible' why is it that nearly everyone on this site persists in using these irritating and incorrect diminutives?

must admit, he does have a slight point here....
i was out talking to my mate in a club the other day, who has an average knowledge of cars...
he said: 'i hear you wrote your car off''
i said: ''yeah yeah, got a new one now though, im well impressed with it''
he said: ''whats that then?'
i said: ''a BMW 320 cab''
he said:'errr...ok...have you changed jobs as well??''
i said ''NO?!?!'' and changed subject
on retrospect, i think he misunderstood the type of cab....
since then i like my new,old fashioned reference to my car...''An E30 rag-top''

All convertible's are referred to as 'Cabriolets' or 'Cabs' etc, Whether its BMW, VW, FORD, A BMW tourer or touring is an estate, BMW just call it touring like AUDI refer to there estate as 'AVANT'.Brianmoooore wrote:Because in German: convertible = Kabrio.bfutter wrote:When the BMW official nomenclature is 'Convertible' why is it that nearly everyone on this site persists in using these irritating and incorrect diminutives?

Im not bothered by what AUDI call their cars but my car is touring or tourer. It may be an estate car but BMW called it a touring so thats what i call it.e36boy wrote: A BMW tourer or touring is an estate, BMW just call it touring like AUDI refer to there estate as 'AVANT'.

Top Gear calls them chops - I guess that's a good reason not to use that term - and as I have an 89 3251 convertable its sounds sooo derogatory. Unlike most people I'm converting mine back to sort of original.
My most recent previous convertable was a '66 Triumph Vitesse its amazing how much the two cars have in common even though they are 23 years apart.
Just think if only we could have managed our motor industry competantly Triumph could have been a British equivalent to BMW - unfortunately we've not got a motor industry any more. Stokes, Red Robbo, non driving BYERS and a long list of incompetant managers and politicians have got a lot to answer for.

Estates are load carriers.e36boy wrote:Still an estate though.
Official capacity of a touring load space (up to load cover) is 370 litres.
Capacity of the boot of a saloon is 404 litres.
You can't have a situation where an estate has ess capacity than the equivalent saloon, so a touring is definitely NOT an estate.

Actually the term Cabiolet originally referred to a convertible with roll up glass windows...as opposed to a roadster that had side curtains.
