My 325i SE has a replacement engine, so putting the engine number on the plate on the front of the engine bay into the ETK comes up with a slightly different variant of the engine that is in there now.

Is there a number stamped on the actual engine that I can use instead?

There is a number (1176565) on the engine mounting bracket at the base of the dipstick, but that comes up with 318iM10 - obviously no good...

I haven't been able to locate any other numbers on the engine itself yet.

The engine number is stamped onto a flat portion of the engine block near the sump on the passengers side above the oil level sensor.

Can be hard to read because of it's position.

Hope this helps.
