Loooks simple enough and my viscous's decided it's died, so using the heater fans to keep the good ol' M20 in mine cool!
Been there too :-x

What a pain in the arse that was!! I'm just hoping the eleccy fan route will be easier in the long run, hopefully..

Not to sure about the control circuit thermothingy though? hence the need to ask for some advice...Sorry.

Thanks for that buddy :thumb: Very helpful indeed..

Which fan are you running in your's then?

Pal
No problem.

I have a RS2 fan

I also want to wire in a thermostate it as I know one of these days I will forget to switch thte fan on and leave it at idle..

The relays are already there to do this, so its not that bad. You just need to fit a thermostate. Most replacemnt rads seam to have places where you can mount one (e36 ones do the trick) on the bottom left. Or you can just put one of those in hose things in. Danthe makes a housing which looked pretty good.

Here are some really bad pics..

From the front, I still have my horn there as there is that much room!

Fan from the top (pulled rad out a bit) Just tie it on with a zip tie at the top!

The Pic's, even though you say are bad, are very helpful indeed, gives me a better understanding of how this all works. So currently you don't have a thermostat switch which will turn on the fan a the required time, but you actually have a switch sitting inside the car...Hmmm. Very interesting.

Dude, you've been sorted, thanks for all the help.

TBH an M3 or aircon fan is the only way forward.

Using an M3 fan on mine and the beauty of it is it uses existing mounting points in the chassis frame. :D
Did'nt have to make any modifications or brackets at all.....just used the OEM mountings :D
Just got to finish wiring it in now

Heres some pics of my setup,
HUGE E32 twin speed air-con fan

Image

And heres where the temp switch is mounted

Image

I will be pulling it all out pretty soon though as ive bought a brand new rad with a temp switch mount in the side and got hold of an air-con setup. So I will probably be putting the complete setup for sale, fan, temp switch mount and plug and play loom.

pm me an offer if your interested and can wait a few weeks

Problem is that E32 fan weighs tones! The best one is the later M3 siemens fan which is better at cooling and weighs a fraction of the heavy Bosch one in that pic.

E30 M3 fan 2.6kgs
E32 fan 2.7kgs

I've not had chance to use my E32 fan properly yet but it kept my M30 cool whilst it was ticking over for 20-25 odd minuets on the the low speed(which is nice and quiet). The fan switching on point is set to 98c and turn off is 94c, 98c sounds too hot but the gauge doesn't quite reach the halve way marker.

I'd like to wire the low speed to come on below 30mph and the high speed to switch on at 98c. It would be nice to tap into the speedo signal and have some sort of control box/relay to trigger the fan but thats a bit beyond my lecy skills. :)

Yep, the slow speed is more than enough on my M50 when in traffic etc.

Its only after some serious thrashing and into a queue of traffic or similar that the fan switches onto the high speed.

This is with an M20 rad and expansion bottle

Andy the ETK shows only the late Plastic Siemens Fans for the E32 and E30 M3 but the one in the pic is a bosch which has a metal frame and is considerably heavier than the Later Siemens one. I have both but the later one is on the car otherwise i could have got the scales out.

Also you will find that its no where near Ԛ£250 + Vat.

Oh, right, cheers for the info mate

BTW does your car have the later thermotime fan switch in the 'stat housing ?

Is it a three pin/dual switching point sensor and do you know what the switching points are ?

Thanks dude, do you know what the thread size is as it'd be nice to just screw it into my stat housing as it's got a spare hole to use ?

Is this the one ?

Well its AM14 by 1.5 so it wont fit into the stat housing.

Can you not put into the side if your rad?

Cheer's dude, looks like i've got a blanking plug with the right thread, could do with the proper plug to make it neat though.

The threads for the temp sensors on my rad are on the cold side so the temps will be colder than the 'stat housing.
