Has anyone done it? Would you reccoment it? Pros/cons etc? I saw a piece on it on an American site and thought about giving it a go, mine feels too light, besides I could use the upper body excercise at low speeds.

yep i've done it, it's fine. the e30 pas rack is pretty low geared and doesn't need assistance except when parking.
i have an m30 3.5 (see sig pic) over the front wheels so it's heavier than standard too. i have 15x7 wheels with 195/50/15 tyres.
i was expecting to have to put the pas pump on the new engine, but i drove it first and was amazed how light the steering is. heavy when parking (but no heavier than it was in my old 1.3 golf) but lots of feel on the road and nice weighting.
save weight too!

Excellent, nothing like free power.
My step-mum had a Rover 218D with such heavy steering that I used to complain, I've no idea how she put up with it.

So you are gonna remove your p s , so how much heavier would your steerin become , your talking about freeing up the extra power , surely it cant use that much power can it ?
Its just that my pas rack is on the way out and i have a spare non pas rack on a donor dog , i might just do it if it gives my 320 a worthwhile power boost , anybody know how many horses ?

might be wrong... but i think a non-pas rack is slower than a pas one, so the steering would be light but less quick.
i'm using a pas rack but with no pump on the engine. fraction more power and a bit less weight

I was intending to keep the rack but remove the pump, ie lose weight(minimal I know) increase the power to weight ratio, effectively increase the power. Would love some pics, I'll pm you my e-mail address.
