Does an e36 centre section fit an e30? considering my exhaust options and was pondering using a standard centre section with custom rear box.. it looks a similar shape.. Sure ive heard of them using the e36 c/s in the states..

Another to consider is the ZRoadster/MCoupé centre section. I have one sat here, keep meaning to go out and see if it fits.
Also thinking about using an E36 aftermarket backbox cos they are small enough to fit in the E30 well.

The E36 centre should fit, maybe with a couple mods. Like you said, the guys in the US use the E36 centre because they need the Cats fitted for the emissions laws.
The E36 M3 backbox will not fit as its massive, but as Jai said an aftermarket box should fit, again with a few mods. Atleast I hope thats the case or Ive just bought a backbox for no reason
The guy with the very clean S50 M3 (Henry I think) has used an aftermarket E36 backbox (I cant rememebr which) and it fitted, it just needed the mounts changing IIRC.

i didnt bother with a centre section.I just ran two 2.5 inch pipes from the manifold to the back box.
The back box is an aftermarket stainless steel one made for the m3 evo (e36).The standard m3 evo box was far to big.
The aftermarket box needed 2 new mounts welding on.Also the tail pipes cutting off and re welded back on at the correct angle.

Hey Buster, With no centre box and just an aftermarket backbox - would you say its 'excessively' loud ?
Im planning on the same thing very shortly but will be running mine on track alot and normally have to be under 99 db.
Dont supose you've had your sound tested have u ?
Cheers

Yup.
Wasnt sure about getting one at first, but it actually seems pretty good. Looks well made and considering its for the E36, I cant complain.
Just held it up to the Sport and it seems it should fit ok (but I was on my back and holding the exhaust), just needs the hangers sorted.

Ive been thinking bout gettin a blueflame one also..
shame its Ԛ£220, but if it works fine with standard centre section Ԛ£300ish for the exhaust is a bargain!

Thats what I thought, but mines only cost me for the backbox. Ive got 2 lengths of 2.5 inch pipe for the centre section (like Andy), might be a bit loud but it will do for the time being.Jhonno wrote:Ive been thinking bout gettin a blueflame one also..

For me it was a toss up between Blueflame and JWR. The exhausts look pretty much the same and are the same price, but JWR seem to take ages to deliver.
I ordered the Blueflame one on Friday night, they sorted it all Monday and it arrived this morning - cant say better than that.

mine isn't really loud, fairly loud maybe.I haven't had it tested though.I removed the centre section on it before when i had the 2.5 in and it doesn't make it a lot louder, just nicer sounding. If you look at the centre section on the e36 m3 i couldnt see any silencers anyway, just 2 cats.
James ,that backbox looks identical to mine, but mine took about 6 weeks to come !
When i built the centre section i thought,if its to loud then i could just chop out the straight lengths that run down the centre of the car and fit some inline silencers instead of the pipe but im happy the way it turned out.

I thought they looked the same. Reading some of JWRs feedback, 6 weeks was pretty good - no fun when youre waiting for it though. Im not ready for mine yet, but had to have it nowbuster wrote: James ,that backbox looks identical to mine, but mine took about 6 weeks to come !
Thats pretty much the plan for mine. Will just wait and see how much attention it gets from the 5-0.When i built the centre section i thought,if its to loud then i could just chop out the straight lengths that run down the centre of the car and fit some inline silencers instead of the pipe but im happy the way it turned out.

The Evo system has a pair of cats and a small silencer/resonator box straight after them.Jhonno wrote:is it 2 cats? thought it was a silencer and a cat?

The MCoupé centre section looks v similar but I guess sands a better chance of fittinf as the Z3 is a bit more like the E30 underneath...Sound reasonable? It has two small cats, the square baffle box nearer the end and a balance pipe just before the backbox connection.
I'll take a photo tonight and try and sus out how to post pitures then.
I was looking at that blue-flame exhaust too... Glad you've ordered one and like it, I might do the same now!

The Blueflame is going to take some work to get it to fit, but nothing too major.
The mounts that are welded on will have to come off and others welded on. Ground clearance could be an issue with the 2.5" pipes, but Im sure I will find a way round that.
I dont know how Andy found the JWR for ground clearance etc, but Im sure that fitting any E36 exhaust onto the E30 isnt going to be straight forward??

I've just ordered a blue flame back box too... Do the pipes look like they'll nedd much modification?
Got the photo of the MCoupé exhaust but now have to find a way to post.. Never done it before so dont have a photobucket type thingy.

They should fit as they are - it seems to sit quite nicely, but the pipes run almost under the diff so ground clearance is low as thats the lowest point of the rear subframe.
Ive got a couple ideas, but will need to get the car on the ramps before I decide how Im going to sort it.

Henry's M3 when he first built it just had a E36 M3 ACS back box i believe, it was damn loud when he pressed the go pedal, since then he has fitted a couple of cherry bomb type silencers to calm it down a bit!jmc330i wrote:The guy with the very clean S50 M3 (Henry I think) has used an aftermarket E36 backbox (I cant rememebr which) and it fitted, it just needed the mounts changing IIRC.

my ground clearance at the back wasnt a problem.Infact about the same as it was before. The pipes from the back box go beside the diff not under it.Just like standard. The lowest point on mine is where the two 2.5 inch pipes run under my gearbox mount.
When my mate comes by with his camera i will take some snaps.Ive been meaning to update my s50 thread with pictures but my camera broke.I will try and get some pics sorted asap.
