I do the usual and depress the brake pedal to stop the check light on the dask from flashing and the red light goes out on the overhead panel. During the journey the dash check light goes on so I push the button and the dash one goes out but the red one stays on.Checking the brake lights and they both work...What's that all about then?

somtimes the bulbs go dark before they blow

this can cause an increased resistance that could trigger the check controle......... not 100% on that but worth checking or replaceing both bulbs for the price of them.

still suprises me that most modern cars dont have anything like this

I've found that corrosion on the bulb holder circuit can cause this. The assembly is easy enough to dissassemble and clean up.Often water gets in there and louses up the board.
If it ain't broke..
Fix it till it is :)

Once tripped, the check light stays on untill the ignition is switched off, so the slightest momentary problem with the brake lights or brake light switch will put the light on and keep it on ntill reset.
Check both lamp holders, fit new lamps, and if it still comes on, consider a new brake light switch.
