Just a quick one....

When you send a head to be re-skimmed, do you send it complete, with the cam and valves still fitted, or stripped ?

you can send it with valves and cam, but strip everything else around the head, like, manifolds and thermostat housing....

Give it to them complete, Keith. They should deal with it all.

It's just cost me £30 + vat for a skim on an M20 head, top qaulity job too.

Probably about £500 or £600+ if you get someone who knows what they're doing.

I paid 100 quid to have my head skimmed, but this also included cleaning, removing 3 broken exhaust studs, recutting all the valve seats, and sorting the exhaust valve guides :D

Hey Mikey-t any one who offers you a price for polishing your head is just after your money. There is no polishing of anything...this is a term that has been associated with cylinder head flow development for years and years...and its just simply incorrect! maybe in the 60's-70's chambers were polished...but its been long proven that this practice is simply poor practice with todays modern design and manufacture.

Its not cheap either if done by a pro engine builder, I normally pay around £40-60 an hour just to have the head flow bench tested.

Although I know people who have bought spares attacked them with a dremel and got as good gains as pro builders, if you have some basic idea of theory it is possible, since there is no exact science to it, its just a case of taking some metal out testing it then taking some metal out and testing it and so on until there are no gains or until you start making a loss.

Read Performance tuning for the four stroke engine, for usefull DIY tips, if you want to go the dremal route!

I'd say that was cheap, I'd love to know who does it for that? but anyway...

How mullered?? Why not just keep saving for the 325 or is it waaaay off? cos thats the way to go, more cc's=more hp per £.

ermmm 2 manifold studs sheared off in head when someone attempted to drill them out (not me ) theyre drill bit obviously caught and snapped round as about 1/2 inch of cylinder head wall is missing, i have a very very slight oil leak from this area, and head gasket symptoms, so im thinking a water jacket or oil way has been hit...

i could afford the 325 engine its just all the ancillaries, time space andeffort thats needed that i cant so i want to get a head and work it then when i do have time / when engine does blow. i have a nicelly worked head ready to drop in
