I thought this might be of interest ?
With the variable flow turbo (VFT), Acura has devised a simple, yet elegant solution for reducing turbo lag. At low rpm, a long valve smoothly narrows the incoming passage and speeds the exhaust flow. This keeps the turbine spinning quickly, so there is plenty of turbo boost at low rpm. As rpm rises, the valve opens, allowing the increased exhaust volume to flow freely through a second intake chamber, keeping turbo boost high. The forced intake air is cooled through a top-mounted intercooler, making the air denser and allowing it to burn more powerfully. The result is the instant and steady power delivery of a much larger engine, while retaining the light weight and cruising efficiency of four cylinders.

varible turbos are fitted to all modern tdis and also fitted to the new 911 also turbo technics make vvt t28s now they use a pair of them on there hill climb 2.924v cossie and it makes 500+ bhp and there on full boost at something like 1500 rpm or somthing stupidly low like that so maybe 1 or maybe an good idea on a m20 or m30
Injections nice....but I'd rather be blown ;)

Garrett used to make a similar sounding thing seemingly exclusively for Peugeot's 405T16, was called the VAT25 I think.
Any piccies of the Honda thing?

These things had been developed for petrol engines in the early 80's but they found they didn't have the right materials that could withstand the heat, they've been on deisel engines for years.
I can't see these being cheap and to be fair a T3 on a M20B25 has no lag anyway!!
Deans old turbo had these funny vanes inside when he opened it up but I think that was more to do with the wastegate than the volume of the housing.
If they want £1k for a new T34 I can't see how these VNT or VFT turbo's will be sold cheap.
Anyway, whats wrong with LAG
Mark.

My first one was a gt22v (VNT)
didn`t really have it on long enough before it died /
I paid £120 quid for it off ebay it was brand new (bargain much?)

this shows how a VNT works

You'd need extra software to get the best of 'em. The ECU on the Diesel engine I worked on was responsible. Took account of rpm, temperature and M.A.P.
Guess it could be controlled by the boost control valve and therefore mapped in traditional way?

Interesting idea.. Uses the twin volute of a twin entry turbo.
How's it actuated? With a vacuum and solenoid or a mechanical servo?
