What shampoo/liquid to wash car with?

I'm wondering what to wash the car with to avoid taking off the wax as I've heard somewhere on here Fairy liquid takes the wax off?

Does cheapo car shampoo from Halfords do the job?

Sorry if this has been done before, and I expect it has, but a quick search didn't bring up exactly what I need (i.e. stuff which takes off dirt and not wax).

This is for the convertible by the way and not the 190,000-mile 316i shitter - that always gets washed with Fairy!

Fairly Liquid will most certainly remove all the wax. It also contains a lot of Salt, so that's another reason not to use it.

Pretty much any brand name car shampoo will wash without removing the wax. I would tend to use one from the same company that supplies the wax though.

There is a product from Meguiars called soft wax, which is pink in colour and does not remove wax protection. I would say the cheepo shampoo would not remove your wax protection, im using a bottle of simoniz wash and wax for the winter months and its quite good. Got it from costco for Ԛ£3

good advice from ian there
dont use fairy unless you are wanting to get previous wax off

my advice is go with the one that is made by same people who make your polish/wax/sealant

Fairy liquid will remove the wax polish on your car
Many of the car shampoo's will also do this to a lesser extent but then they leave a silicone behind to give you a nice finish
Auto Glym shampoo has NO stripping agent in it so that is the one I use I like all there products
If you keep your car well polished you will find just warm water is enough to clean it

auto glym super resin polish does contain silicone along with a lot of other horrible stuff
its terrible to use
terrible to take off ie hard work and creates dust everywhere

autoglym is a very very hyped product that sells due to its availability and glossy ads

there are products out there that are far superior and cost no more

obviously its mho but many many tests have been done and autoglym consistently comes very low in rankings

try some other stuff out there and you will be very surprised how poor it is

would using really hot water wash the wax off? i use lookwarm water because of that, but i can never tell if it makes a difference or not

Glad to see that a professional agrees with my very amateur opinion on Autoglym polish - its total carp

Not all of their products are that bad though although imho each of their products are outperformed by one or other of their competitors

luke warm water should be used without question
also use two buckets
one for suds and one to wash off your choice off cleaning pad/cloth after washing panel as to not contaminate suds with dirt and grit

I use Mer shampoo aswell as mer polish does a great job on my car.

meguiars car wash! its called gold class i think, i bought it in halfords and its gr8, it wont leave watermarks either.

i use all meguire produsts thier tceh wash is the muts nuts. i think auto glym is over rated and priced. they do do a great bug and tar remover and glass polish ather than that meguirs. i was advised to only use cold water by my painter as even luke warm water takes off the wax little by little. really if the car is waxed two or three times before use clean water should be sufficant to remove the dirt. after clening the car always bry wit a chamois if u dont want water stains. my two cents.

Chamois are ok, never really got on with them myself. i used to use the autoglym synthetic chamois leather untill i bought a drying towel off of c76jon, Fantastic and i couldnt be without it now.

Washing: i use Meg's Tech wash, bottle seems never ending!
