Everyone has their own taste I suppose.

I personally do not like them but then as dmaxfield says - it's his car and what everyone else thinks doesn't matter.

Only argument I would never enter!!! BDA sounds much better with twin 45s then S14!!! And to be honest a nice 325 sounds better than an S14!! Im not defecting but you cant beat the sound of a nice 325!

However, in answer to the question, is an M3 worth the money??? Hell yeah!! I was just about to say buy a 215 late spec and give it a pipe, remap and schrick cams but someone has already said it.

Ok on paper even with those mods it wont be kicking out a massive amount of horses but put it on a track against a Mistsu Evo and you'd be suprised at the results. I know I raced mine against a bike (not a grifter) and whooped his arse and he couldnt believe it when we stopped at the junction!

Get one!!! They cost a few quid a year to maintain but wont lose any money in depreciation so it pays for itself.

one more thing to point out, and i only noticed this last night, i found an old BMW CAR mag from november 1998 in my wardrobe the other day, first to point out is the difference in mobile phones and sweaters (huge brick like phones, pull up ariels and thick wooly jumpers, and 98 does not seem so far ago!!! ) and more to the point was the price of M3's (and there were about 7 for sale) even then they were going for 8-10K, so in reality if they are still worth that now the price has not really changed in 8 years (well 7 years and 11months) so when you figure a cars depreciation over that time and use that money as maintanance you would have been better off buying a second hand M3 in 98 over a 10K ford Ka. I also have to figure that this price trend is not going to change (in fact i would say values of good cars may even increase over next 5-10 years) so your choice now my friends is this, get down to Kia and buy a 1.fcuk all tin cup for 10K or a nice late M3 for same price and see what happens over next couple of years.

i know what car i would be in and it wouldn't be Korean!! :D

fuzzy wrote:dont be put of by scare stories.any high performance car will be a bit more expensive to maintain and on older cars like these bits will fail from time to time but if you buy one thats been well maintained it shouldnt be to hard to live with 8)
As Fuzzy will know (or know in the near future) high performance does come at more of a price than a std engine, if you're looking at close to 100bhp per litre its going to need looking after. Cant advise on M3's as never owned one but just from reading owners views on them you wont be disappointed...
If you can afford to do it.. do it

you will not be sorry buying an m3, just check for the rust (as mentioned above) check the gearbox(gretag m3 boxes are like gold dust and expensive) the engines are as strong as they come but if it did pop you can expect to pay 4 figure sums for one. for the money you are spending u will be able to get a stunning 215bhp model.
one last thing.... look at about 4 or 5, dont rush buying it! 8 grand is allot to go dumping on some shit heap abused m3.

gear boxes can suffer with worn layshaft etc but these can be sorted by quality g/box places for about £220

its the fact that these cars are so old now

what you want is a car that has been maintained all its life and not just in last 3 months

you gets what you pay for and cheap purchase price will very likely lead to expensive after purchase bills

body work is most important .RUST is the killer and expensive to sort out properly

cracked subframes, corroded chassis legs, cracked turrets, etc etc are not done properly cheaply

buy the best car you can.imho dont be lead by colour etc

imho go for 215hp car and take your time

there are very few proper m3s left and the people who own them know their worth

dont be sucked in by amazing adverts telling you its this and that

over the years ive looked at over 100 m3s to buy and 95% were dogs tho a lot were up for strong money

this included sport evos with halfords service history which was up for 17k

they are out there but will take finding

best of luck.they are an amazing car

and bear in mind that in their day they were very very expensive and porsches etc were same price if not cheaper

they were a very specialised car

just because they are 18 years old does not make them any less specialised or in need of any less maintenance
