On the cover of august's roundel magazine, there is a red 87 with the bumpers tucked and painted. What is entailed in the tucking and is there a "how to" description anywhere?
Thanks

Does anyone have before and after pics? Also, I saw that someone found a way to do this by screwing the shocks in. Can this be done, or do you need to drill them. Thanks

since E30s in th UK never had those shitty bumpers, you will probably find more answers by visiting http://www.unofficialbmw.com/phpBB/index.php

this is a USA E30 forum and you will find a lot more users have done the "tuck"

nope you need to drill the shocks, The American government in thier wisdom  decided cars should be able to take a crash from 5mph and have the bumpers undeformerized (they should not deform) as bmw at the time had metal bumpers they could not pass the test as metal would deform and not return to its original state, so to compensate they had a metal bumper attached to gas shocks that would absorb the impact and push back out due to oil pressure in the shock. to get round this you must drill the shock so that when you push it to to tuck your diving boards the oil comes out and the metal portion of the bumper does not return to its original position.

What kind of bumpers did you guys have during the same year? Is it the same just minus the shocks. I know as you go into the later years they get the nicer bumpers. but what does a bumper from an 87 look like in the uk? THANKS

no completely different. from 84ish to 1988ish we had the metal chrome bumpers, look in the pictures gallery for tech 1 cars, they looked exactly like those bumpers but were not colour coded (and didn't have the same valance) or alternatively look for the pre face lift cabs, thay had metal bumpers till about 1990.
