at the weekend i decided to cure my tappy manifold by replacing the exhaust manifold gasket! once all removed it turns out 2 studs have sheared off in the head! and on one of them some numbskull has tried drilling it out and missed , removing a large chunk of cylinder head,! i got fed up put new gasket on loads of assembly paste and am bearing with it! but now the fuel consumption lack of power and noise is killing me! so i have some choices! do i!

1) buy a secondhand cylinder head off my uncle who owns a scrap yard, if so will any bigger heads fit the 320i block, etc etc

2) get a helicoil set remove the head and fix it up bodge job styleee
and save my money for the 325i engine i want in there, while doing bodywork , screen ,etc etc

3) deal with it until i can afford 325 bang it in and do all the bodywork screen etc in one foul swoop , having the car off the road for like ,,, a month!!!!

help me i need to know, i am unable to make my own choices

never drill studs out imo, this is how i took mine out the other day, it is on a stand but i have done this in situ on places alot tighter then a e30 engine bay. If you dont have welder then its still the best/easiest way to do it and take it to a garage and tell them to do it.

clean end of broken stud and block any holes up with some rag

Image

On a hobby type mig welder put it on highest setting and weld until you got pool the diameter of stud then stop and keep doing this to build it up until it stick out of head about 10 cm

Image

wait for it to cool for 1 min and get set of pipe grips or mole grips, pipe grips prefered and undo it, if the weld breaks off then the weld you did wasnt hot enuff and you need to weld for longer or on a hotter setting.

Image

wouldnt ever drill out anything thats bigger then 6mm unless its in steel then id say 10mm+ unless you got special stick welding rods. If its snaped from doing it up to tight then those reverse taper bits are perfect but if its siezed then you need to heat it up alot first to use an extractor or you have to carefuly drill with normal drill and maybe helicoil.

also dont see why you would need car of the road for a month to do and engine swap and change windscreen, you can change e30 windscreens in less then 30 min and do abit of research and engine swap could be done by amater in a weekend no problem i reakon

i say a month as i have little to no money at the moment and thats how long it would take to get some cash etc to do the essentials

theres lots of work that needs doing on the car and if i was to take it off the road i would do it all in one

Update!

driving the car today heaters (which have been on full to divert heat away etc) suddenly went cold, engine temp rose etc and we all know that is bad news ,,, opened bonnet and had a nice oily burning smell, and a bit of water seeping through my manifold were the stud is missing,

thinking my head gasket has gone there, dount the fuckers have gone deep enough to go through a water jacket! well i hope~ looks like a head off , full skim and machine, quick rebuild and hope the head ok, if it is mullered i will have to save for the 325, but if its not i will try rebuild

i go for the full engine swap since its obviously fcuked now anyway, especially as your uncle owns a scrappy so should do you a good deal.i hate doing anything with manifold studs as theyre guaranteed to snap as soon as you touch them.the muppet that done my engine conversion 'forgot' to put in 7 of the 16 manifold studs 8O but i put it in the hands of a professional to fix it

ive never known wether to believe these quick fix things as some folk swear by them and others just swear at them but if it worked for lee you cant argue with that

phoned my uncle and he said e30`s usually just get whighed in as they are so heavy , but he has a touring in at the moment. so thats possibly a donor head

decided a 325 is going in,

head is well and truly fubar! looks like the gasket was was being typically german and stubborn and has stayed in tact the oil is coming from were the damaged manifold stud was so i think it has weakened here and popped a water jacket! we have creamy gunk and rising temperatures! and yes i am doing the good thing! keeping it driving till it destroys itself!

so 325 will be going in after being convinced by ian yet again, will pull the car off the road end of the month, sorn it off for 1 month and use that as a deadline, also a bit of time to tidy up the bodywork and save a months tax lmao,
all depending on how much i get paid of course
