it warm up the air in to yous intake , not good for power !! it was fitted on to cars which had cold climates eg sweeden etc
there are 2 heater plates, on between the TB and in let manifold and one under the TB, simply remove and reconnect hoses
1 hour job !!

yep ! you may need to cut one of the hoses before you redirect it as its a tad long, but its simple!!

keep an eye on yoru coolant/temperature for a while after; the pipes are old and very frail and easily ripped as i found out when doing mine; also make sure you plumbed it in right as you dont want coolant going into the vacuum pipes
i felt that at hot temperatures and after long drives mine was less jerky than it was with the plate on

I had to bodge a few split pipes so think im gonna buy a complete new pipe set in future.

I just made it so that the pipe that puts the water goes into the pipe that takes the water out. Hope thats right.lol. So you just bypass the heater plates.

I had a plumbers supplier solder together two right angled pieces of copper to make a U shape for £1.stuartgallafant wrote:but how did you bypass it? did you use a small peice of pipe/tube that goes inside the end of the hoses?

it doesnt gain power but it stops the air being drawn in getting heated! which improves combustion tenfold as cold air is a lot more compressable than hot air

Just to be a bit contrary, my 1.8 with this done, eleccy fan, sebring system, K+N panel etc put out about 107atw on sheps' rollers. After MS fuelling (AFRs down from high 13s on full load to circa 13 all the way), put out about 112atw. all in 4th gear. I saw the same sort of gains from remapping that kos has seen (approx 5 whp), but I don't think the other mods really did anything for the peak power output and my base figure was a bit lower than kos' from the sounds of things. fwiw compression was very good on that engine (quite low miles), the motronic was 100% no fault codes etc, new TPS and cam sensor etc. - in short the car was fighting fit, and felt good compared to other 318is. think the 147 at the fly was a pretty high figure, and my wheel figures fairly low - but we all know that rollers vary.
I do think its worthwhile though - mine actually has the coolant running straight from the block to the head, missing out the U bend etc too.

I bypassed it by using the original u bend. The metal bit pops out of the rubber housing and i used it to link the two pipes together.. Seems to work fine for me. No leaks so far.

don't really remember the exact details. i had the heater plates off a few yrs ago, then one day I had the inlet off and decided to tidy up all the pipework under there ready for ITBs so ditched the U-bend - i just took two of the orig hoses joined together to go from the plastic bit on the block straight to the head. in hindsight this is a pretty cool way to go, it makes it all so much cleaner under there, much less likely to leak etc, should flow and actually cool the engine more efficiently etc.stuartgallafant wrote:how did you do that tim?

What would happen if you just removed the pipe altogether ?
The output from the back of the block can be unscrewed and just replaced with a bolt and some kind of bung could be used at the thermostat housing. (M20)
Has anyone tried it ? Does the engine run any hotter ?

far better to jsut re-route the pipe straight from block to the head like i've done - you'd have to bung up both ends (block and head) otherwise, and w/o taking a look at my spare head am not sure whether it would work - def best not tampered with imo - its hardly difficult to reroute the pipe straight to the head.Martinaston wrote:What would happen if you just removed the pipe altogether ?

I've done it! I re-routed the piping to the head with the one length of pipe and slotted it all back together, beautiful, will give it a run out in a bit
