electric mirrors-dead

a few days ago at the scrap yard i got a electic mirror switch becuse my car has electric mirrors but it had no switch...just a blanking plate over where the switch goes so i put it in and tried to operate the mirrors but neither of the mirrors worked so i tried another pair of mirrors and they didnt work either so im quite sure its not the motors. can someone tell me if the engine has to be running for the mirrors to work? or can you use them just with the ignition on? i cant start my engine as i drained the oil and disconnected everthing because im about to change my engine.

I think they work with just the ignition. Might be worth checking the switch. My mirrors never worked when I got the car, but I got a new switch and now they are fine. I think it is possible to open up the switch and clean all the contacts.
