Hi folks

Can anyone help me diagnose my clutch problem?

It all of a sudden started slipping on me, to the point that I only just made it to my girlfriends house, where it's lying just now - when I checked under the car there is a nice fresh puddle of dark oily fluid...

From searching about I reckon it could either be my main rear seal has bust and I've ruined my clutch plate with a liberal coating of oil (nasty DIY/expensive garage job) or the clutch slave cylinder.

Has anyone had a similar experience and can point me in the right direction? It's an M40 318i engine, my engine oil is still at the normal level, there appears to be fluid in the clutch resevoir, but the cluch pedal seems to be a bit softer than usual.

Any pointers greatly appreciated!

If u jump in the car and the clutch hits the floor with no preasure behind it, it sounds like the clutch slave cylinder, if u look under the car at the gearbox you should see the slave cylinder is it coverd in oil? if not cuold be time for a new clutch mate

spent a while this afternoon rolling about under the car, slave cylinder looks fine, gonna have a bash at replacing the clutch tomorrow if ECP have one in stock. If things keep breaking at this rate i reckon by this time next year the shell will be the only original part left

OK, spent today with the car up on axle stands, removed the propshaft, transmission etc, pulled off the old clutch and slapped on the new one... gonna have to get one of those clutch alignment tool things in the morning though cos I cant seem to get everything to line up and get back on

crossed my mind that I may as well change the rear main seal while everything is to hand (the old clutch didn't actually look oily when I took it off, just incredibly bald and smooth...but I suppose its worth doing while I'm there just in case!)

problem is no matter how hard I try i cant find the post/thread I looked at this morning that had an exploded diagram of the clutch/transmission assembly that showed me where I should be looking for it - does anyone have that picture, or can anyone point me in the right direction?

Cheers :D
