Is it possible to blow up a H/U (when wiring in speakers), so it'll play a CD but not make a sound? I tested a speaker and at least one still works!
Is it cheaply fixable?

getting the polarity wrong on the speaker connections shouldn't blow the unit, i wouldn't have thought so anyway.
Is it a Pioneer? I recall they used to have some odd wiring for speakers with common + etc
someone who knows what they are talking about may be able to help though

How did I do that? All I did was wire it to a set of crossovers!smithy318i wrote:you probably fried the amp chip.
Cheap to repair? It's a Blaupunkt which looks nice in the dash, not all chrome and ricer!

Got a meter, I can troubleshoot a car lighting circuit, not sure I do the same with the inside of a stereo! I know it's buggered, no sound comes out
, guess I'm just asking repair shop or replace?
Unless it's a easy fix?

plug it in at a specialists, if it works its your car power scource, or wiring, if not u have narrowed it down to the unit, try all connections, make sure there secure, inspect for burn / scorch marks, sniff round for burning smell , etc etc if the head unit means a lot to you, al leasy checks! if not i got a clarion going at the right price

I assume you're now trying/testing it without the crossovers attached?? Could just be them otherwise!
May sound silly - but i assume the cd plays ok in another working stereo?? Not just a duff disc??
Also, i assume you've checked the connections on the back of the h/u and associated wiring plugs?? You're not just testing from the speaker end of the cable??
You can test it with a multimeter - just touch on the +ve and -ve of one speaker, turn it on and up a small amount and you should get some voltage out of it. Same for RCA's. Just check 'em all, but don't run it for too long with no speakers attached!
Wrong polarity won't damage the unit but could damage the speakers, if pushed!
Shorting out +ve and -ve speaker wires could damage/fuse the amp. As could running the amp with no speakers attached (no load).
Any fuses on the h/u that you can check/replace - often one on the back of the unit, but not sure if thats just for the power feed or what!
If you've still got a channel or two that work and some that don't - it could be a blown capacitor on the amp cct. Hi-fi amps are easily repairable, but i dunno about h/u's! Might be a sealed unit?
Hope some of that helps!!

Are all speakers correctly and fully attached? I've lost ALL sound on a head unit before because one connection on one speaker dropped out. Stange but true.

Could've been wired with a common -ve or +ve (whichever way they used to do it!).polwutna wrote:Are all speakers correctly and fully attached? I've lost ALL sound on a head unit before because one connection on one speaker dropped out. Stange but true.
Or could've been a dodgy setup with speakers hooked in series or sumthin
Only my guesses!!
