rite, my car is starting to get a little hot; or so it seems. the gauge just starts to creep past the halfway when driving but sits for a while. however the gauge bounces back and forth to and before the half way point. in traffic it goes up to about 3/4 mark. the strange thing is, when the engine is turned of and the key returned to the ignition point (the stage were the lights are on) the gauge shows halfway as normal; this is all while the engine is at runnign temp btw.

what i dont understand is, why does it show above half, all the way up to 3/4 when the engine is running, but when the ignition is on, it shows it as being perfect at halfway?

iv tightened the nut at the back of the cluster with all my measly might; iv bled the cooling system; i think the viscous fan is on the way out but this wouldnt explain the random gauge would it?

it might possibly be the temp sensor located near the thermostat housing, its a redish orangeish colour plug next to a blue one.

Shaz its a little harder to get access to this sensor on a 318is M42 engine as its located on the left hand side on the cylinder head. But its covered up by the Inlet manifold.

It could be a combination of the sensor and the instrument cluster.
