The background is:
H reg m40 316i
Had a dented fuel tank and noisy pump.
Prior to last weekend I removed the pump and sender to belt the taqnk back into shape.
On return from a five day break, the car would not run.
I fitted a fresh working fuel pump.
The car now starts and runs at idle (although this is a touch shaky).
When I depress the throttle, the car stutters and dies.
The idle mixture is probably way off because the knacker who had the car before me fitted a cone filter, suspended by the inlet hose which tore badly. He then adjusted the idle screw to try and compensate...
It's had new fuel lines and filter prior to me banging the tank into shape.
So what's causing it to stall?????
Shite being sucked up? I'd have thought it would be settled again by now...
ICV???
Please help.

Have you checked the hoses? Especially the one going from manifold to the fuel pressure reg...

manifold to fuel reg hose is only a few months old... I used diesel leak-off tubing.
I've not cleaned the icv, but the idle seems better with that disconnected, but the car still stalls when given throttle with the icv disconnected.

Does this happen constantly regardless of how long the car has been at idle? Sounds like a problem I had with a previous sport which only manifested itself while cold. Turned out to be an airlock. The car would start and idle but once I pressed the throttle and left it off again it would stall. Became quite proficient at left foot braking due ot that problem as I had to keep the throttle slightly open while braking to avoid having the car stall when cold a junctions and lights!

I can't even drive the bugger! Even the slightest touch of throttle and it dies...
Last check of the plugs showed they were in great health, all fresh white to sandy brown.
When I squeezed the afm to inlet rubber, the revs rose a bit...

Smithy, cheers for the reply mate. Mine is still a bit dicky.
Having checked the fuel supply at the throttle body, there isn't any...
The new pump no longer spins
it clicks.
The fuel line from pump to filter was backed up with fuel, so I reckon a blocked filter has caused the pumps to commit suicide.
On my return from the match I shall be buying a new fuel filter to go with the Ford RS2000 in tank pump I have fitted. It fits into the pump carry cradle nicely and is rated way above the needs of a 1600.
I'll post up the results.

you can often fix the fuel pump by hitting it with a hammer.
if it's new, just take it back for a refund or exchange

I have been trying to tap both pumps into life, but they are both fubar...
The second broken pump was second hand from Bell's breakers in Craghead. It was working very well when I bought it.
Thankfully, the solution I had engineered has worked. The old filter was clogged when I blew through it, so I have replaced that with new.
I'm glad to have it sorted as the car currently sits at £400 on ebay and I reckon the winner would be pretty gutted to arrive and find a non-runner!
Since I inhereted the car I have replaced both front flexi pipes, discs and pads then bled the system.
Renewed viscous clutch, vacuum pipe, fuel filter and dodgy fuel lines. I also refitted some tubing for the afm to inlet.
That got it home from the west end of Newcastle.
Then I fitted new shoes, alloys and tyres. Fitted the correct afm to inlet boot, new sidelight bulb, new brake bulb, second hand driver's mirror.
Gained MOT!
Then the driver's seat flopped back... and the pump got noisier... and the fuel sender went on the wonk... full tank and the reserve light on???
So I fitted a new seat base frame from a four-door, with my cloth covering it. The driver's seat also would not tilt/ slide, so I migged up the snapped cable.
And really, the pump lead me to this saga.
I have fitted a new leccy mirror switch (a terminal had snapped off in the other), but the passenger mirror won't work, so I'll be investigating that too (I reckon it's the old door wiring harness problem!).
All in all I reckon whoever wins the car will get a fair bit of VFM out of me!!!

Well being a teacher I get a bit of time over the summer, plus the parts have all been either good second hand items or via my trade accounts. All told I've spent around £200, plus £50 fuel.So £400 returns a modest profit and another e30 with good potential lives on!
I've spent today setting the idle mixture and now I've got a rock solid 800 rpm when hot!!!! Well chuffed, if only the cabby was so settled at idle...
This is the car:

Yes I fixed it.
The idle problem was down to the mixture screw and some excess wiring running to the afm. A boat load of new petrol helped too. The excess wiring seems to have a break in it. So I removed it and with the screw turned on the warmed up engine I was fixed.
