Hi. Can someone help. I have just had the Universal Joint replaced on my 325i sport
It was fitted by an approved independent garage using Genuine BMW parts.
The symptoms were;- steering knocking when going over bumps etc.
After the part was fitted the problem was cured, but I have now developed a shimmering / scraping noise coming up from the steering column.
The noise disappears when in neutral (free wheeling) and when changing gear).
It's noise is more prominent in the early stages i.e 1st, 2nd and 3rd gear changes.
I returned the car back to the garage where the part was fitted and was told there was nothing he could find. I found this rather odd as i mentioned it wasn't there before the new U.J was fitted.
I decided to take the car back a local BMW dealer who road tested the car and DID hear the shimmering as described. They checked the new part and there conclusion was a possible missing grommet / rubber shaft missing form the re-assemble of the new U.J.
The case continues......
If anyone has any further comments on this or experienced the same symptoms, I would appreciate your views as I urgently need to get this problem sorted out.
Many thanks[/b]

There is no rubber grommet on the ends of the UJ, you would have to drill the rivets out of the centre section to get the centre one out though. But i doubt the guy who fitted it would do such a thing if its a new one.
Sounds more like the engine is not sitting back in the original position on the mounts or they have perished and its rocking from side to side when your on and off the power.
Might be worth checking the heat shield on the UJ to see if its bent and hitting the exhaust as it rotates, assuming you have power steering you can turn it by hand with the engine running, but probably best to do it from cold because your pretty close to the manifold.
