Mer polish

Has anyone tried MER polish?

From my experience of it on a black car, its shite! leaves a greasy feel and smeary too. i think its got a high silicone content to help with the glossy look.

I agree , on my black car it was shite.
Zymol is the dogs and is resonable on your pocket . But if you wanna splash out Zaino is the stuff , but it costs dollars$$$.

or an alternative to mer that is around the same price bracket is Meguiars, very good for the money.

I found Neat Mer good for keeping bumpers/trim very shiny!!

i have used a couple of zymol products and they are very good, not sure they are good enough to command the high price imho

i have to disagree with most of the above comments. i have been using mer for years and when applied with a little time and care it produces a good shine that lasts very well. it works very well on my bmw r1150r and other bikes i've had too. i have just switched to meguires and it's a lot more money and the difference in the level of shine is negligable if the truth is told. i left a 'control' panel (o/s third of bonnet) untouched before i started my time consuming and thorough meguires application (i'll post details in my paintwork care plan thread soon) and the people that i asked to find it couldn't. they said that they could see the difference once i'd pointed it out but until then it's definately a case of diminishing returns.

mer is really quite good, especially for the money.

I found Meguirs tech wax a lot better to use than the Zymol. I found that the Zymol left an awfull lot of residue, the tech wax is a lot less "powdery". In terms of shine I cant tell the difference, both seem to be of the same quality.

For every day cars on a budget, then i'd say Maguire's. I used Mer before and it's a lot of work taking the fcuker off. If you're into high end stuff and dont mind paying a little extra, then Zaino is the way as been provved a few times now. Have mine waiting in the box and i'll be unleashing it soon

i've come to these conclusions:

at the end of the day it matters more how much time and care is taken with cleaning and then product application than it does which polish/wax is used.

with all these products it's definately a case of diminishing returns. (for those that might not know, diminishing returns is the law that the more paid for a product, the less relative performance is gain is to be had. the performance to price ratio is not even as price paid rises.)

the important things: to protect paintork from the elements with something, whatever product chosen so that water is beading and not sheeting. (it's interesting to take a walk down an average street in the rain and see how many cars have beading, it's bugger all.) remove any bird poo or anything else as soon as possible. (check car at least twice a day if possible if left outside.) and finally be smug that your car is clean and most are a disgrace.

Hmm. Thank you for that Pastor Paul I only done 2 shows last year and i walked away with Best Paint at both. That was at Max Power Live and the National BMW show and i'd used Maguire's at both shows, so if what i've been hearing about Zano is correct, then exciting times are ahead. It all comes down to the prep when you polish as with most things in life, but then like i said, it all depends on how fussy you are about these things

its allin the prep........................... PERIOD!

how shiny it is is largely down to prep

top layer product needs to amongst other things enhance as well as possible what you have underneath
ie the finish on your paint/laquer before application

you therefore need a product that allows light through it to give it as much shine as possible off of the surafce you have and let the light out again

zaino for instance is 99.9% optically perfect so the reflection is as good as it gets

but this quality is only one that you look for in a product

durability is a major one without doubt this is where canurba waxes fall down ie products like zymol

good results to be gained and a top quality product but diminishes very very quickly and needs topping off a lot and the more elements its exposed to the faster it diminishes ie sun,rain etc etc

ease of use ie application and removal

residue left after removal (autoglym is THE worst!!)

comments made about cost are imho flawed

its not possible to pass comments like that without the experience of use over a period of time

eg some would say theres no way id give 20 quid for a bottle of sealant/polish

but they would gladly give 8 quid for autoglym shite

fair enough but how many cars are you treating with that bottle??

i will use zaino as an example.a bottle of z2pro will last me 30 cars plus

with zaino the less used ie thinness of application the better it is

its the whole picture that needs to be taken into consideration when passing judgement

MER for me is what it is .a mass produced product that doesnt particuarly excell in any dept.

its not easy to use and doesnt give jaw dropping results but saying that its by no means the worst

cut thru the maxpower whole page adverts regarding car care products and how this product will do all this in a 10 second application horse shit and the truth is you largely get what you pay for

theres very very little on the market here or in the states that i havent tried

why........well two reasons .one iam always looking for anything that may just be a major breakthrough and be the best thing i have ever used as iam always striving for perfection
secondly i feel its not possible to compare any of them to anything else unless i have given it a fair crack

as of yet nothing has given ME better results than Zaino on my paint surface that i will add has been prepped over many many many man hours

nothing comes close on durability either and i mean anywhere near close

there were a set of products i tested just recently again from usa that came quite close on appearence
durability was okish and application was involved tho thats not a problem for myself as i know you only get out what you put in and the all in one quick fix doesnt and never will exist

i removed all zaino from my paint and applied this product

i spent two days doing it and i can say from experience its not as good

but like Ben says its down to what you are looking to achieve and what your expectations are of the product bought

polish/wax/sealant on the whole is like beer.everyone has their own tastes

just my thorts and comments are not aimed at anyone or any products specifically

except autoglym which is the devils excrement

Agreed about the prep thing, it's like anything prep is the key, the final stage is the shortest and least important step! I stripped all the wax off mine again and went over it with the light polish again and rewaxxed it. Results were much better than before due to the laquer getting flattened out a bit more. I will do it again in a couple of weeks and get rid of the last of the swirls (rewaxxing in the meantime to protect what I have done already)

Welding is pretty much the same, all the work is in the prep of the weld, not the weld itself. 15mins prepping a seam and 2 mins of welding is better than 5mins of prep and 15mins of cutting duff welds out and redoing them!

Woo. Nice one mate. I havent seen the Rieger for so long i actually don remember what it looks like. Yep i entered both my cars in the Show and Shine for a laugh, although it's sponsored by Maguires so i'll have to put all the Zaino stuff in Maguire's bottles or i'd stand no chance of whinning

Ho ok then. I had the car in the paintshop when they were changing the interior and they managed to get lots of overspray on it, it then went to the trimmers where it's been sat for 2 month and i was shocked to get it back at the weekend. It was in a terrible state, so i'm sending it back to paint shop tomorrow to be buffed. I just hope it works otherwise they'd be bloody painting it again, so i dont expect to win this year I'll just have to vote for the Msport
