It's on the inlet side of the engine block at the bottom where the sump bolts onto the block. There's a raised part on the casting next to the dipstick tube with the number stamped into it. The numbers on the top row tell you which engine size it is and the bottom row is the engine number
It's hard to see when the engine's in and there's surface rust on it

Hi, I need to know my engine number to register on V5. The only number I can see is this:
BMW 1278 921 132 87
Is this it? It's the only number I can see. It was on the side of the block, under the inlet manifold...

looks more like the casting number
The engine number is right at the bottom of the block where it meets the sump next to the dipstick tube.
Cheers,

Hmm. OK then... I guess I'll have another look tomorrow! Shame I didn't think about it while the engine was out!

I was looking for my engine number a short while a go. Simply phone up an official BMW garage and tell them your registration number and if you have it, the chassis number (should be written on your MOT slips). They can then tell you the engine number from their database.

That will only tell you the original engine number though, I'm assuming you've changed the engine if you need the number for the v5 ?

Still can't see anything... I've had a good look around the dipstick tube. The number I mentioned above is cast into the side of the block, behind the dipstick tube, but I guess this isn't it then?

Unfortunately donor car was originally a 320, and the previous owner fitted the 2.5 engine... it was still registered as a 320 as well, so no use I'm afraid
