Right Guys,
The inevitable has happened. My 91,000 miler has the dreaded rust. Cills,
rear inner and outer arches so the guy stopped the test to save charging me. He said it was a waste of money to fix unless there was sentimental value which there is as I have owned it since 1992 and am the second owner. However as it is a second car I have decided to part company. I have not decided whether to just sell as is as spares or repair or dismantle every last part and put them on ebay ie wheels with 1000 mile Toyos, LSD, Interior, springs switches etc. I have the room and the tools and I will just cut what is left up and chuck in a skip. The engine and box are silky smooth and the car is totally original. My questions are how much do you think all the parts are worth off the car and is there a demand for shockers, driveshafts, windows, sunroof etc. Just away into Glasgow now to put my plate on retention.
Thanks,
Pete.

Dont do it,get it repaired!

There will be loads of demand for parts if you do break though :)
but seems a shame with the mileage and the 2 owner bit!

Hi welcome to the Zone

91 000 is low mileage! but if its rusty its rusty...

You will get far more money if you break it yourself. Should get around or over £1000 in the end if you take everyting off!

Be willing to post world wide and have the time to pack stuff up and you will do well out of it.

It depends how bad the rust is really. No matter how much sentimental value it has, you can weild and wield but eventually it is going to rust again surely? Plus as we know people welding is not cheap

have you got any more specific specs of the car? im sure you make over a thousand if you break it mate, i made 800 of a shabby 318is which had been crashed!

Christ you guys got me thinking. As I said I was on my way into Glasgow but took a detour to a place someone recommended for a second opinion. He loved the car and I am going back at 2 o'clock to get it up on the ramp for a corrosion assesment. He said he would give me a straight answer and if its bad I will then go and retain the plate. As for the specifics,
Lachs silver, 15" cross spokes which I refurbed last year with correct paint , 1000 mile Toyos, great condition Mtech2 kit, cloth sports seats, black headlining etc, 10000 mile rear genuine sports shocks, leccy sunroof. Basically everyting is as it should be except the rust. I don't want to spend money after money as the rust works around the car.
Thanks again and I will let you know the verdict later.

Well just back from second opinion with some hope. There is nothing more than surface rust on the offside cills. The nearside however is a mess. You can pull chunks of cill off along the whole length and under the boot where the jack sits. He however thinks it is well worth saving and is 99.99% sure he can do all the welding of cills and fabrication of plates for other small areas and mot for £450-£500. Its going in on the 24th of July. What swayed me was the other mechanics taking an interest and his enthusiasm for the car and of course your comments. Will let you know.
Thanks again,
Pete.

Just the same thing happened to me.

I took the car for a respray, after the mtec bits were removed revealed rusted cills , wheel arches, & rear panel, i instructed them to carry on.
Then after removing the glass revealed the rear 1/4 panel to be rusty & the front scuttle holed & a previous repair present, they then told me to take it away for scrapping, the reason was that it wasn't cost effective but i encouraged the guys to rebuild my baby,it got worse!, they then informed me that it needed 2 new wings & a new sunroof panel, by the time the car was painted they were totally sick of seeing the car in their workshop and saying they were losing money on the deal.

However i was not about to let her go via the rust worm so my advise is- if you can afford to do the repairs & be ready to splash the cash again go for it, .

Good luck :D

Well just spoke to the garage and it ain't getting fixed. Took kit off and the rust just kept on going. He would nearly be at the other side of the floorpan to get something solid to weld onto. Shame cos apart from the body the car is near mint. So next few days will decide to sell as is or break everything. Such is life...........

The garage I took my 318i to charged me a tenner for the weld on the sill (small patch) and didnt charge me at all for the failed MOT on the touring.

But then again they were sick of seeing me and I had already spent about £400 with them asking them to do all the niggly jobs!

Reshell sounds a plan if the car has snetimental value. It is a sport aswel. Sad to see a sport broken.

If you re-shell it doesnt it take on the identity of the shell? number plate etc?

I have low miler that is rotten as Fcuk but cant bear to break it.

Yeah it takes on the identity of the new shell. Cos my mate had a 320 automatic that was actually a 325 sport that got rolled.

F*ck reshelling , frag the turd and buy another one, there are still lots of decent cars out there, though the number of decent sports is definately finite, most if not patched up scrap are councilled patched up scrap.
