Anyone know how to time up a 318is? Theres two arrows on the cam sprockets, but where are they supposed to point to? Ive got haynes manuals but non of them cover m42 engines. Thanks, Martin.

They should be vertical, or rather perpendicular to the top of the head.

E36 haynes covers the M42 well if you want a manual just for the engine.
