my e30 cab has a 'steering rack problem'...it needs a new one. its leaking steering fluid apparently?

bmw specialist has quoted 400-500 for it to be fixed.

is steering rack failure common and is this quote resonable?

i think he said he would get it all reconditioned...

Recon racks are around £170-00 and a couple of hours to fit, plus a bit more time to flush the rest of the system out properly and set the tracking.
Rack failure is fairly common at the sort of mileages and ages that E30s have reached.
There's enough E30s with power steering reaching the scrappys these days to be able to source one from there. Pull back the rubber boots on each end and check that there is absolutely no trace of steering fluid in there before parting with your money.

Follow the track rod from the wheel in - you can't miss them.
