Always had a high rev plasticy sounding rattle that you can hear on WOT, tappet or injectors are noisy and clutch release bearing aint the quietest either - but i have a new rattle :(

Noticed it when pulling out of a juntion that was between two high sided buildings (great for echo diagnostics  ) then also heard it in 2nd gear. Was very low on fuel at the time but after i filled up i could just about hear it under heavy load too.

The best way to describle it a low metallic noise

Car drives fine, shows no signs of problems etc, just wandered if its a warning of something about to go wrong

Always difficult to diagnose stuff over the net i know... :(

Cheers

Could be a bunged oil pick up, when driving hard it can't pick up enough oil!
No doubt a pro will come along and tell ya different :?

If it was an oil pick up problem it would manifest it self with the idiot light coming on.

Sorry but you will need to describe it better than "low metallic noise"

I see the sense in that, Reason I say is.......

My 323i would make strange noises under load but only top end of the rev scale.
Was the oil pick up bunged :?

Not saying I am right, just another thing it could be!

Thanks for the replys guys

Always difficult

Its a big like a quiet version of a diesel clatter if that makes sense...........

Oil pressure light hasnt come on when driving at all, but have noticed it doesnt go off as soon as the engine is started, all the abs etc lights go out then oil light flickers and goes off

Noise sounds like its coming from the top of the engine, tis weird, cant really say that it rises/gets louder with revs, it just seems to be there :td:

Dont stress guys, hopefully the car was having an off day :)

Half the studs are long gone mate and there is a huge crack in the exhaust manifold, im used to these noises

This definatly sounds more mechanical, im not gonna stress about it, i'll just have to get my spare engine ready in case :(

Yeah ive seen the pics Steve, looks good fella 8)
