unsure of the cost. probably just the cost of seals, renting a compressor, and an adaptor for the spark plug hole.
this is all hyperthetical(sp) though.
I was able to replace the valve stem oil seals on an old datsun sunny by rotating the engine to TDC on each piston, to stop the valves falling into the cylinder.

a good indication is puffs of white smoke as you are going along
my old 320i started this at about 218,000 miles

not totally true.
stem seals would give a plume of blue smoke on startup, after overun, and after long idling (such as traffic lights)
in light of your recent probs jamz -it wouldnt have been possible to tell with the turbo as it was....dont be hasty....

Sup G,
Dunno m8... wont know anything till i got the system back together but not knowing exactly what it is annoying..
The smoke at cold then seems to calm right down once warm says Stem-Seals..everyone will tell you that...i still had way too much Oil feeding that Turbo which as soon as you started the engine you could see it push through the O-ring and out the Charge end..and i mean instantly..Would a turbo on IDLE pull that Oil through the Mani and through the Turbo seals that quickly with only that much pressure if indeed Stems seals were gone?? Does a Turbo Spinning on Engine Idle pocess that much back pressure to do that and at a steady flow too?
Not even sure Turbo is porked and no way to tell so 80 quids is the only way i will tell..then i could put it back together and have the same dam problem...then what?
Like Jon stated before..if this was all Oil seal/turbo problems then why not plooms off smoke on boost...not that i can see exactly what going on behind me but you get an idea right..?
What im thinking here:
Lets say too much Oil feed ruined the Blower Seals..Charge pipes are caked in the stuff but not up near the AFM so wet oil isnt being blown into the TB then?? so whats causing all the smoke outa the exhaust?? is that Oil flying through seals being burned on a hot turbo then being flung through piping,Engine then out of the Mani through the turbo down the exausts??? lol..
Most of these things are on a 'Wait and see sheet' but im goverened by delivery times and all the while im 'doing me ed in' hopeing that a seal kit and a new Oil flow adjustement is an answer to all my engine woes..

doesnt necessarily tell me that.lets look at this logically fine till fitment of kit, stem seals dont just go!
if turbo is leaking into exhaust and intake its gonna smoke full stop.how is the breather setup?

From TB its blocked off..rocker cover breather goes into a lil gauzed chimney that sits same sort of level under the inlet mani and its clear..ie not blocked...its puffing away as norm or at least what i think is 'the norm'

ok ,m8 your gonna have to fit the turbo once rebuilt.you will need to clean out intake from compressor to tb of all oil.once reassembled you will have to burn oil from exhaust if any left so dont be alarmed if you get blue smoke on initial startup next time round.
then if your problem persists-shout up on here.
And remember think logically -dont go stripping down all possibilities, you may introduce more probs.
r.e feed -did you source a proper line and fitting?

Nope.. tried to get sizes on here..got replys but not what i needed..gave up
Sent various Emails etc..no replys
As far as i know the pressure switch was a 12mm thread.. so i need a block/connector with a 12mm thread which then can accomidate an oil pressure sender (not sure on exact size till i purchase one) and also T off to a braided hose of which needs to be 4-5mm max Inside D..
For the moment after countless starting of the engine which prolly didnt help anything i got the required feed or as good as i can get and then superglued the Tap/restrictor.. i could allways ccut a cross in the end of the 10mm copper pipe and reduce the siz that way for the time being too.

Yes as G says, its a 12x1.5mm thread. Basically its a bloody uncommon size. There is a guy on e30tech that supplies oil feed kits for m20's but i'll be buggered if i can remember who it is i'm afraid. Might have been "gigashadow?"
Also question for everyone, how do you diagnose valve stem seals have given up the ghost. Is there more of an official way than "blue smoke on startup, etc etc" Anyway a machine can tell, if there is, it may rule them out a lot better than what is effectively guess work between that and the turbo seals. I can't think of a way other than to change one, and see if the symptom is still present, if it is, change the other. This unfortunaly costs £Â£Ã‚£'s

I can find various fitting that are 12x1.5 in Danger tweaks do em under there hose and fittings section.. but i cant find one that will accomidate a sender for the Oil gauge and obvioulsy a feed for the turbo
12x1.5 that IS the sender i can get but it doesnt have another feed i could use for the turbo

nope ,never heard of such a diagnostic tool-go by symptoms and use knowledge/experience to tell you.
as allready posted its gonna be hard to pin it down at this stage with the induction and exhaust system subjected to excess oil.but ive had cars with shagged stem seals and not smoke as bad as jamz is describing(unless guides are goosed too).but as above car was ok till modified.
pointing towards recent events.

Cheers Dude
OIL GAUGE T-PIECE M12*1.5(M&F) to 1/8NPT(F)
That should do ok right?
Thats should accomidate a Sender for a Gauge and a Braided oil line with a 1/8NPT male connection with a Inside Dia of 4mm

G...Is that right? As none of these dam Companys reply to Emails regarding Info...guess im not spending enough money with em
Need to know this is correct before i go and purchase..
BTW inside Dia would be 6mm as 4mm isnt available AFAIK so is ID 6mm ok for Oil feed?
While im there il get myself a braided hose for the oil Drain too.. Sump has a tank fitting with a 15mm M on it.. so i can hopefully get a Drain pipe approx 12-13mm ID

I got nothing on the turbo feed..not sure if Jon hacked it off TBH..looks like someone did but not 100%sure .. so thats a pipe with an ID of approx 5mm with a slightly bigger Knuckle on the end..so may have to make something up for that..may be able to squeeze the Braded over that and clamp it..be tight though as the knuckle is 9-10mm
