Trouble with second hand couplings is that they MUST be stored on their edge. If they are laid flat for any length of time they will be scrap.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

right just brought an e30 320i and i wanted a decent project!

a project is what i have got!

it seems to run very hot when in anything other than free flowing traffic! it actually emptied the header tank in less than a minute! so i think that may be the one solution (could it be anything worse? no tell tale head gasket signs)

m8 lol....
if your fan is kaput ,coolant will expand and exit through your tank (which is leaking)
you may indeed have deeper trouble but the above need to be sorted for you to progress!
stat??????????????hmn you have said once on the move car is fine, stationary or slow it overheats-this aint related to a stat.stat would cause it to overheat all the time if it failed this way.

another thing to note once your vehicle is cold the coolant will contract and then you will introduce air into your system too....trouble on the way m8 if you dont sort the tank and coupling.

The cooling fan is needed at idle and slower vehicle speeds. But a vehicle that's tooling down the road at 60 mph doesn't need a cooling fan because plenty of outside air is being forced through the radiator without the fans help. This discovery lead to the development of flex-blade cooling fans and cooling fan viscous clutches. The latter allowed the fan blades to freewheel when the extra cooling assist they provided wasn't needed. This saved some gasoline and cut down on unnecessary noise under the hood.

here ya go pepes.
