I was talking through the ideal car the other night, and we came up with fast & economical. Hmm.

So will this : http://tinyurl.com/p2v7s shoehorn into an E30?

And would it handle the front-end weight if it did?

;)

I've been considering exactly that recently.

I think the 2.0D engine may be a nicer conversion though. Much lighter and still 200bhp 280lb/ft after a remap.

It'll chip up to 200?! :)

With the chassis weight down, you could be looking at 60 mpg on a run too, with better performance than 325

I've run this one over in my mind as well but the associated electronics scare me lol!

2.0d lump will handle better also due to weight being further back..

120d does 0-60 in 7.8 secs as standard!! Nearly 325i territory from the box in a heavier car with 50mpg

with a remap.. winkeye

seen an e46 320D dyno at over 220hp at the flywheel on a coastdown guesstimate, afaik it was just chipped, nothing else done. Only 4pot though, need the 30D for 6pot rightness, it probably would fit, the e30 bay is bigger than the e46 one I belive(maybe not as tall though).. and after seeing inside a 330D I can honestly say I have no idea how they got it in there..the 2l is tight enough

It's not the size of the engine thats the problem its the wiring and loom etc that is.

If a v12 can fit it surely can fit.

a 200 hp 2.0 sounds sensible, though the 2.0 engines are few and far between at a decent price...

The old 2.5 tds is another possibility, far cheaper engine; 150 hp stock and only <40 mpg though...

I don't want to even think about the cost of putting one together though, even if you budget £1k+ for the drivetrain, the conversion must push that up to, what, still a 10K project? Wiring like you say, plus the rest.. :(

It's funny, Dervburners are supposed to be simpler than petrol. all you need is power to the fuelpump and the valve open, the compression should do the rest :p

Modern cars and engines are just too complex for my liking, I enjoy something I can hit with a hammer when its not behaving itself! The 6pot 325tds engines are supposed to be indestructible provided they are intercooled. I think they were also fitted to some of the older vauxhalls but sans IC, so I dunno if they would be a good choice. Would be damn cheap though.

tbh want cheap and quick.. get an LPG kit, for the amount of cash involved in the engine conversion route, a cheap LPG kit fitted would give you good MPG and the money saved would run it for a loooong time.

hmm lpg :?

I do fancy a nice 6-pot diesel. Good honest engine. Bit of torque. The 2.5 tds ( with IC for the 150 bhp) would make a cheapish first bash at it. Did the Omegas only have the 135~ish bhp engines then?

the only problem i have with lpg is i would want the multipoint injection and not the single point mixer type.

ive been told multipoint is a bit more work to put into an e30.

plus the multipoint has negligable power losses and is less likely to catch fire

If you want to go all out I think there is a new type of multipoint 'wet' injection LPG system that actually increases hp output, only saw it in passing a while back so might be wrong.

The catch fire issue I think was ages ago on a car with plastic TBs, I don't think it can happen anymore due to a change in the valve systems.

just been reading up on diy lpg

looks like insurance companies want a certificate from an lpga fitter before they will insure the car. of course if you fit it by yourself none of them will certify your work incase it blows up or something  . im a registered corgi gas installer for central heating systems dealing with natural and lpg gas everyday.......but im incapable of putting a tank, some lines and a manifold into a car :x

yay! another monopoly created by insurance companies to piss me off
