Don't know if anybody can help but I have just bought a J reg 316i tourer on which everything electrical works except the tailgate washer and wipers! I have a 4 pin plug into the wiper motor which has a thick brown wire,a red/black wire,ayellow/black wire and a black/mauve wire,I have put a circuit tester on all of these cables and get nothing? Can anyone offer a solution to the problem and tell me what the aforementioned wires are? (I'm still trying to locate a Haynes manual for the vehicle. ANY HELP GREATLY APPRECIATED!,

Cheers,

John.[/b]

Brown wire is earth.
Black/red is the parking microswitch. Connects to brown when switched on.
Black/purple is the rear washer pump control switch. The rear washer only works when the wiper arm is going in the direction that the washer jets point. This wire connects to brown when the arm is going in one direction only, and is open circuit when going the other way. The switch consists of a steel plate and a brass sprung contact, and the steel often goes rusty.
Black/yellow is the supply to the wiper motor. Apply 12V+ to this and the motor should run.

The black/yellow comes from the rear wash/wipe control module, where a relay switches the black/yellow to the 12V+ permanent live purple/red wire for motor run, and to the brown earth wire from the module for motor stop.
And welcombe to the zone!
