Would it be against the rules of E30s to replace my electric window and sunroof switches with the more modern E36?? The E30 ones are shit and stiff but E36 ones are quite nice!
Opinions please

How easy is it? Do you have to cut the plugs from the E36 loom or will they plug in?
I think it'd be a nice mod, the E30 ones are a bit tough. Where are the easy up control modules? Is it feasible to fit these or are the electronics in the motors of the E36 (I have a feeling they are).

I dont know the ins and outs but even if the wire would need modifying a bit I cant see it been that hard, only the fitting of the switches into the console

you have to slightly file the console to get the switches to go in and you need the surround(thin plastic frame if you like) from the rear door switches or sunroof switch to make them sit flat as an e36 console is slightly curved
No longer self employed but still available for welding duties.

Wiring should be a piece of pi$$ really, thought about e36 switches for my windows. They're simple switches so should be a straight swap. Didn't realise anything about curvature though...Falkster wrote:I dont know the ins and outs but even if the wire would need modifying a bit I cant see it been that hard, only the fitting of the switches into the console

Though about this myself, tink i've read smithy's site before, certainly not a simple swap IIRC!
Don't think it's possible to get the one touch switches to work though!

Aaahhh one touch switches!! Forgive my ignorance!!! Do they not work on a capacitance charge?Kedge wrote:Though about this myself, tink i've read smithy's site before, certainly not a simple swap IIRC!

it works using a PolySwitch (or Polyfuse) is a polymer form of positive temperature coefficient resistor (PPTC) which acts as a self repairing fuse.blatantarrogance wrote:Aaahhh one touch switches!! Do you know if you can get it to work on an E30 though?

Ie it heats up and stops working then!!!smithy318i wrote:it works using a PolySwitch (or Polyfuse) is a polymer form of positive temperature coefficient resistor (PPTC) which acts as a self repairing fuse.blatantarrogance wrote:Aaahhh one touch switches!! If I allow myself to indulge in a bit of wild speculation, there' no reason for it not to. Cars run on 12v. Apart from an earth connection, what more could it need??Kedge wrote:Do you know if you can get it to work on an E30 though?
Seems straight forward enough?
(cue clever clogs blowing my laman theory right out of teh water!!!!)

You can buy a little after market control box thingy that will give you one touch windows once wired in, no link but try googling it

Are there two types of switch for the E36? My friends has switches that push down one click for normal use, and depress further for the one touch operation.
Do cars with no one-touch have switches without the second depression? Are rear window switches this 'single click' type?
A home-brew module using scrappy bits that operates when the second depression is reached would be fookin P.I.M.P. (and I normally dont bother with stuff like this). A bundle of relays to override the switch and provide a safe 12v feed, controlled by a low voltage/tension circuit would be easy to rig no? (well, not easy for me, I'm useless at electronics).
One thing: This mod seems more suited to pre-facelift cars as they only have two holes in the centre console. Later cars seem to have the window cut off switch. Is it possible to fit the early console and stuff the (nearly useless) override switch behind it..
Jai
[EDIT] - Just read some of the above link. Seems the one touch switches are off the cards unless you make one of these relay boxes (as I guess they run low current switching to controll the box of tricks in the drivers door). Use the rear window or sunroof switch with the flat bezel. Also: I assume that cars without electric windows have no cut-outs and are perfectly good for this job. Nice one.
How much is a 316i centre console new? Many thanks.
