Got my car back from a garage in Letchworth where it had been for a repair to the wheel arch and for the wing to be resprayed.Took one look and refused to sign the papers saying i was happy with repair as it seems
something has been spilt on the bonnet and got under the laqeur causing it to lift. When i rang the garage the boss there said oh yeah i noticed that but when i came back to look again the car had been booked out and was on way back to you.Anyone got any idea what could have caused it.
before pic at bottom, after at top. not very clear but best i can do,

seems strange its only on the bonnet and not on the wing,is that the wing they repaired if so did they remove it to spray or was it masked off.it looks like it was removed and someone spilt something on you're bonnet while it was off or the bonnet was off for the wing to be sprayed .you can narrow it down to something they use in a body shop
hardener
thinners
gunwash
either way as long as they admit there was a problem you should be OK for them to repair it just a pain in the arse time wise :(

Cheers for that Andrew, Bigkev yes that was the wing they were repairing.Bit reluctant to let a firm that let it leave their garage in that condition have another go at it.Didnt want it to go to Letchworth in the first place.
Unfortunateley didnt have much choice.Cut a long story short a young newly passed driver reversed into it and
drove off,but the soppy cow actully lives in the same sq as me and imprint from my tyre was all over her rear bumber. She admitted it when i confronted her and her insurance co agreed to pay but i had to go with their
choice of garage.Top it all its just added 150 miles to clock and im on limited mileage insurace.

You do not have to go to their choice of garage absolute FACT some insurance companies will not give you a courtesy car if you do not use their authorised repairer. SO F+++.

Take it somewhere else.

if the repair has already been done, and they caused this to happen - you will probably have to go back there, as the issue is now with the garage - not the insurance company!

Also, i didnt think you laquered non metallic cars!

most the bmw were laquered even if ist not metallic it looks like either masking tape has pulled a bit off or a jet wash has peeled it ,if you had a little bit lifting before this can make it worse or if the paint work on the bonnet was badly done before............hard to tell in a picture

F***in fumin. After admitting it was their fault on phone ,it seems the garage that carried out repair have gone back on their word.Rang the insurance firm involved to find out when the independent engineer was coming to
view damage, only to be told that they(the garrage) are now saying it wasnt them. Have now been told that if i
want to contest this an independent engineer will come to view damage but if he sides with them that i will have to pay the costs.Does anyone know if when the original engineer came to view car whether he would have taken photos,im almost sure he would but then again nothing would suprise me after this.Sorry to be so long winded but right now i feel fikcin homicidal. Not best time to go for a drive i think. :x

Hi dude I am a sprayer,Had a look at your pics and it is either the repair shop has blended the colour of the wing into the bonnet and either not flatted it enough leaving a shiny surface thus causing it not too stick to the old paint or they have done it but let the basecoat dry over night then laquered it causing the laquer not to stick to the basecoat.
The other theory is that it has been painted at some point and the masking tape has lifted the laquer on the bonnet, either way they should have let the car go in that state take it back and get them to do the job properly and tell them to supply you with a courtesy car whilst it is done, they should not be able to revuse you as this is their fault

May not be a great deal of use to you in your quest for a satisfactory solution but, in my opinion, you pay your insurance company good money to act on your behalf in such circumstances.
If they aren't prepared to represent you properly I believe the E30 Zone members would like to know which insurance company it is they should avoid.
Personally, if I couldn't resolve it to my satisfaction I'd probably join numerous car club websites and swamp them all with the same tale, naming both the garage and insurance company involved......only as a last resort of course

Definitely looks like the masking tape has caused this problem, you can see the line of the tape on the bonnet it you look close... To confirm this get some more tape in stick it near the existing damage, leave it a short while to adhere then peel it off. See what happens!

To be honest, if the fault is in your existing paintwork then the garage can't be blamed 100% for this... i know this might hurt. I reckon you will be lucky to get them to pay for the damage in full.

Sloppy of the garage not to have pointed this out to you before you went to pick the car up. Like the others have said, you DON'T have to use the insurance recommended companies, but any 3rd party quotes you get do have to match the cost of there preferred company quotes.

Have you had the bonnet resprayed in the past?

Mark i can see what you are saying and being car is 20 years old i would say it was a fair bet that it has had a respray at some stage.Having said that the garage said in the first instance that they had noticed it AFTER work was carried out but when they went to have a second look my car was already on the way back to me but they would send an engineer to look at it. I then asked them to let me know when the engineer would
view car as i wanted to be there as well /Yesterday when i rang insurance firm involved, not mine BTW, to try and find out what was happening they told me that the garage were now saying that it wasnt them that done it.

Bunker, to be fair mate its not the insurance firm ive got an issue with. They are the girl who caused the damage insurance firm. They can only go by what the garage have told them but they apparently sent an engineer out to asses the initial damage and ive just emailed them for his number.Hopefully he will have taken photos as well.Which i did as soon as isaw car.

This is just getting worse.Turns out that it wasnt an engineer who came out to originally view damage
but an asessor from the garage that carried out the repair.Garage aparently then sent images to an engineer who authorised work to be carried out but only after they had collected my car and took it best part of 60 miles to their workshop.Seems strange way to go about it,what if engineer had refused to authorised any work?.Another strange thing is i was originally told by garage that they would be replacing the whole wing l i then told them that the arches had been rolled by a previous owner. When car came back and i rang to complain about bonnet damage
i also asked why new wing hadnt been put on only to be told that the engineer had now said it wasnt nescersary.Have been asking for photos that the engineer got from garage and im now being told that they cant send them to me because they use a system called ARATEX.Any of you IT boffs heard of it,and is this feasible or do i smell a very large rat.

I stand by my previous comment. Name and shame both the garage and Insurance company. You don't pay good money to be treated this way and even if you can't get satisfaction with your claim at least you can inflict some damage on these cowboys.

Bunker ,will be naming both firms but as this is an ongoing thing ive got to be a bit careful as to what i print
or say.Sure i saw something on here recently where someone had a claim dissmissed because an insurance
firm had monitored a forum.By the way the system is called AUDATEX,

I fully understand your caution. I do have a selfish motive as my insurance is due for two of my Beemers soon and I am currently reviewing quotes from the major candidates. The garage involved won't concern me personally, as due to my location I won't be using them but I'm sure other zoners would benefit from knowing who to avoid.
Good luck with your fight.

audatex is a fairly standard system bodyshops and insurance companies use to estimate vehicle repairs. the normal procedure for small repairs (ie dents to wings) is for the estimator at the bodyshop to take digital photos of the damage to the car and put them together with a repair estimate and send them to the insurance company, not sure if they just use email or similar but i can find out.if the engineer agrees the figures and thinks your car is worth it he will authorise repairs without ever physically seeing it thus saving time.

i would think that copys of the photos will be saved somewhere and that the bodyshop is just being awkward to get rid of you.

i did also think that it looks like poor adhesion between your base coat (colour) and laquer and that the masking tape has lifted the laquer.as said before the bodyshop is not really responsible for this as they have just used standard practice with regards to masking but most garages i have worked at would either put this right as a courtesy gesture or in the very least inform you of the problem and offer a part responsibility solution (basically you only cover part of the cost of rectifying it)
No longer self employed but still available for welding duties.

Get picture up in the system. press printscreen button.. save the whole thing in mspaint.. job done. I am of course basing this on being a Windows system, but 99% of stuff is nowadays.

no bodyshop will remove a wing to repair it as its just unnecesary work, they may have refered to removing it when they were originally going to fit a new one.also the people you get on the phone dont always know much about the job and just spew out any old b.s. they are after all just there to answer the phone.the receptionist at one bodyshop where i was foreman caused me no end of problems by just spouting the first thing that came into her head which bore no resemblance to the truth but seemed to make sense to her
