I have had to replace the boot lid on my mother in laws 318is with an mtec 2 spoiler'd item (the original was damaged). Does anyone know if the boot lid mechanism can be adjusted or uprated to cope with the extra weight the spoiler adds as it seems to be a bit dodgy when fully opened?

Spring tension can be adjusted, look under the parcel shelf and move them to the next 'tighter' position.
Be careful though they bite!
Try attaching some 'mole' (self locking) type grips to the end of the spring when you are trying to move them to the next tension position.

The two torsion springs are different on Sports with tech 2. not sure if tihey can be adjusted enough top cope with extra weight. I also think the gas struts are different but not sure on that bit

Saloons don't have gas struts on the boot lids...
The Mtech II cars should have a larger diameter torsion spring, you can adjust the smaller spring on the 318iS but the boot lid does tend to slam shut quite easy!
Why not swap the spoilers over? What was originally damaged the spoiler or the boot-lid??

Quite right - just the convetible. Just had a look at a coupé! There are two different mounting points for the spring, just tried it.E30Mark wrote:Saloons don't have gas struts on the boot lids...

The boot lid itself was damaged but I kept the spoiler. Can you swap an mtec 2 spoiler with an original IS unit? Looking at it, I thought it would leave marks visible on the boot lid where the tec 2 item had been.

The two spoilers do have a slightly different footprint, but the fixing positions are identical.
I would take the spoiler off the boot-lid you wish to keep, and give it a clean and polish to see what it's like...
