did you get the wiring loom, ignition key and ignition barrel as well? As these are required to allow the ECU to make the car run. (or so I am led to believe)

that age of car had the EWS system, so you will need the key, and the ews box, its coded to that brain.
you can get another key from the stealers, but they will need the chassis number from the car that the brain came out of.

Another way around it would be to run aftermarket management!

nope, doesnt seem like it, unless u can:
A - get the vin number of the car it came out of to get a new key from BMW
or
B - use aftermarket management to eliminate the bmw management and the need for the key ;)

you dont need the ignition barrel,
cars equiped with ews will have a transponder covering the outside of the barrel, so you will need that part of the loom,
any transponder will do, thats just reading the frequency of the key,
but the key needs to match the frequency set in the brain.
i think the stealers can reset all of it but i think they ask for you to bring them the whole car(you'll have to check on that).

yeah the key needs to match the brain.. no ignition barrel involved
Can get a key if you know the chassis number of the car it came from..
Aftermarket managment is virtually impossible due to the vanos = Ԛ£Ã”šÃ‚£Ãƒ”šÃ‚£Ãƒ”šÃ‚£Ãƒ”šÃ‚£

i looked into after market engine management for my project car,
because there's four vanos unit's,
i was told
"you'd better apply for a lottery grant"
as it would need two management units in piggy back, one unit isn't powerful enough.

Ive got the 3.0ltr M3 engine, but it is a late one so has EWS.
Basically, as said, you need the ECU, EWS module and the ignition key(s) all from the same car. The 'aerial' and loom can be from a different EWS equiped M3 or bought new from the $tealers.
If the ECU is from a different car to the EWS module then the engine will not run. They cannot be recoded to work with each other.
If you have the ECU/EWS from the same car there is a chance they will need to be re-aligned if they havent had any power for a while, the $tealers can do this.

Which M5 engine are we talking about here? e28 3.5, e34 3.6, e34 3.8?
None of them have EWS. However the conversion is a litte bit harder. More realistic power though as the 3.6's are known to always put out 315bhp+.

damn all this talk of m5s.... i feel like taking mine out for a drive (gotta love the 3rd gear on that thing!) but i cant cos its in pieces!
u have to do ure research well on both conversions and tot up the costs as it really really does add up especially when u start adding goodies like suspension, brakes etc.....
