i bought a new walbro fuel pump that is rated up to 500bhp and its from an escort cosworth.the shop tells me its a direct replacement for the e30 item.its a small item that goes inside the fuel tank but has electrical connections on it.i dont understand how something with electrical connections can be submersed in petrol without going bang.is this true or am i about to 0-60 vertically after a huge explosion? :?

I bought a replacement (standard) pump for my touring a year ago, and that had to be soldered to the original carrier, so it sounds like it's exactly the same thing.

The rotor of the pump is indeed immersed in the petrol, even the commutator/brushes are in the drink. The reason they don't explode is due to the fact that there's no air in the pump (I was told this by a Bosch fuel injection specialist).

What I can't understand is this : You fit a new pump that has never had fuel inside it, you fit it and fire up the car. There is now air and fuel inside the pump, how does it not ignite ?

Cheers,

surely if my petrol tank isnt full then there is some air in it...and if my tank is full then the 2 pin +/- plug is submersed in fuel...i take it petrol doesnt conduct electricity.maybe i should just stick to my joinery work, worst that can happen there is i put a nail in squint :D
