Every so often my ignition key gets stuck in the start position.
the engine starts and the starter motor continues to turn.
any ideas why it's getting stuck, and how can i fix it ?

had same kind of problem with the other halfs astra, that was an electrical fault believe it or not we went thru 3 starter motors in 6 months cos we didnt realise the starter was just sitting out a bit when it shouldve gone back in and eventually went. was quite fun one time on the M4 when it happened and the immobiliser turned on.
even nowadays when we start it up we have to check EVERYTIME that the key has gone back to where it should be as it still sticks a bit. the mechanic couldnt work it out either.

Have you checked the ignition switch? Take the steering column cowlings off and it just unclips fromt the bottom of the ignition barrel.

this is a very common fault on vauxhalls.
it's a 5 min job to swap on a E30 though so just give it a go

neighbour had this problem with their citroen. Turned out to be the grub screws holding the barrel in place had come loose, and all the 'springy' bits that fit to the profile of the key were gripping the key in the on position.
Tried to help him get it out, but that damn french car just wouldn't let go!!

not too hard. is the steering lock off (eg, does the wheel turn?)smithy318i wrote:How do i remove the steering lock assembly?
if so, remove the wheel, remove the plastic shields, remove the stalks, drop the column down a bit (the top bolts), cut a slot in the top of the shear bolt and unscrew it. the whole lock assembly should come off.
if the wheel won't come off, you're screwed! possible but a lot harder!

If you can't get the steering lock off with the key, then I know of no reversible way to do so.

Havn't tried it yet, but shouldn't be too difficult to remove.
One other question... does the mechanism inside the assembly come to bits or not?
just wondering if i can lube the old one, or i need to buy another.
