My steering growns (if thats the right word) when stationary where I turn the wheel to the left. Particularly if facing down hill.

Any suggestions?

Look at the colour of the PAS fluid ... If it's dirty then start by changing it before looking for other problems.
Clean fluid looks a bit like cherryade.

I have this exact same problem. You can't feel anything through the wheel. I was gonna get the old WD40 out.

first step is to change the fluid and clean the gauze in the fluid bottle

if this dosent work then check that ur track rods arent seized
also check for leaks at the pump and rack including the pipes

worst case is rack or pump or possibly both

but if its not a loud squeal then fluid change could solve it

Not sure about the downhill bit, but you shouldnt turn the steering while stationary (though I know I do, i am sure we all do sometimes!!) the engine drives the power steering pump so it groans when you make it work while not giving it a bit of power.

but if it does it while moving along, check your fluid level and condition and I hope its not the Pump itself!!

If the fluids clean it might just need a good bleed.

mine makes a groaning when you get above 30mph, sounds like a demented wheel bearing, i'm thinking its the rack, but it still turns ok.

will probably leave it til after the hot hatch day at knockhill on the 13th-no point busting a new rack on the track

Thanks for your comments.

How do I bleed the system?

Oh and it is a load noise but only happens when stationary, or going very slowly. Also for some reason only when turning the wheel anticlockwise

Could it be a belt slipping under load?

Unlike most snake-oil, Lucas Power Steering Stop Leak does actually quieten down noisy PAS. Give that a whirl.

Project - take the cap off and give the steering a few turns lock-to-lock with the engine running (ideally with wheels on gravel or such). Have a look in the reservoir for bubbles.

It's not for leaks in the sens that it's dripping onto the floor, more for inner seals. - it helps with noisy or lumpy racks as well.

If there are bubbles, keep going until there aren't any new ones coming up!

take it that it wouldnt stop the kind of leaks that fill the bellows?
