Hi all I own a 1988 320i sedan and the drivers door conection moves when opening and closing the door. I can't see how to access behind the panel to fix/tighten the bolt that holds it (if there is a bolt) Hope pics explain the part thats moving. Suggestions on how to fix are welcome

Cheers!

Pic isn't big enough to see anything, and doesn't have a link.
If it's the door pilllar side that's moving, then it's breaking away and needs welding. (sunroof drain tube inside).
If it's the door side, then the nuts inside are captive, and you can just tighten the bolts. The part inside commonly breaks, and is removed by taking out the pin that anchors the stay to the door pillar, removing the bolts, removing the door card, and lifting it out.

I have arrows pointing to the problem. That whole section with the rubber cap round it moves when the door is opened or closed. Hopefully you can see the picture and confirm for me where to look to fix it.

Cheers again

Just a little!!
By what you are saying, it's the door pillar part that is breaking away and needs welding. Not a common failure, but not unheard of either.
There was another thread on the same subject last week.
The rubber cap isn't fixed in any way and just slides over. Pull it out the way and you'll be able to see what's happening.
Pin has a little lip on the bottom, and then has to be hammered upwards.

Not to be a pedant, but that's "Pin has a little CLIP at the bottom. Just in case you try to hammer it out! :)

Mine was exactly like that when I got it. The bracket the door strap is pinned into had broken away from the pillar. Made two loud bangs every time it was opened or closed.

It needs to be welded. Pull away the rubber seal, take out the pin and move the strap out of the way. You can then either put spot weld in the gap between the bracket and the pillar, or (if you're brave) drill through the two dimples on the pillar you'll see and redo the welds in their original places.

Don't let the bracket fall into the pillar when it's loose - I think it was box section!
