Hi guys,
Looking to fit an original E30 fire extinguisher and bracket. A fellow zoner has offered his for sale saying it is charged but cannot guarantee it will put out a fire (hopefully it will never have to) due to how old it is.
Does anyone know what the score is with re-charging car fire extinguishers? How? Where? How much?
Cheers!
Nick

BMW can re-charge the original one, £40 iirc.

Yellow pages/yell.com - look for safety & security - there will be a local firm who can recharge them.
Don't know about prices though

Anyone know for sure if you can buy new ones for e30s + bracket from the dealers? If so, any idea of cost?billgatese30 wrote:i didn't think bmw re-charged them but i could be wrong, i thought the 40 quid was to buy one new

I've had this issue very recently, BMW can supply a new extinguisher with bracket for £40 ish but the bracket is a universal affair.
The new type of fire extinguisher has a different shape top and won't fit the original type bracket.
BMW don't recharge them and all the local fire extinguisher companies I spoke to won't recharge them because they are not approved to the current BS spec's due to their age
If you have an original seat bracket then that can have the new type bracket fitted to it.
Cheers,
Iain T

not quite the same but as far as household/hotel fire extinguishers, nobody will recharge any pre 1995 ones as they are not deemed to be safe?? or as said previously they dont meet newer BS standards

IIRC a car fire extinguisher lasts about 10 seconds and will not put any major car fire out, certainly nothing in the engine bay! They look ugly and are a waste of spece IMO!
I have used one twice, on a fire safety course, and the instructor (both occasions, different countries!) the instructor laughed and said waste of time!

Again, thanks for all your input on this one. Think the best option really is to just a buy a new one with bracket from BMW. I know car fire extinguishers aren't exactly goin to stop a raging fire or anything but are better than nothing and to me just makes the car seem a bit more complete - like having a first aid box, warning triangle or glove box torch, never really use them and hope not to have to but nice to no they're there. Saying that I actually have none of the items just mentioned...
Thanks again,
Nick
