I fitted a BTB zone 6 branch a couple of weekends ago and although the performance and exhaust note are fantastic the under bonnet temperature is fookin HOT

Is this exhaust heat wrap stuff all it's cracked up to be ? I do beleive that it'll reduce the heat given off by the manifold and that'll obviously help keep intake temperatures down but I'm not convinced that hotter exhaust gasses will give more power :?

What are your opinions ?

I thought that exhaust wrap was just a load of crap, until someone reminded me of some simple physics........

Hot Gas's move fast

Hotter Gas's move faster......

ive heard mixed reports on this stuff Iain

some say it does as it says it will

others say the heatbuild up inside the wrap has caused manifolds to crack

this is why i never tried this stuff before

depending on what the manifold is made of.. have to check with btb.. if its ok do it, it'll make a hell of a difference, just buy the better stuff, cheap stuff doesnt last

Daz, i think cast manifolds are more prone to cracking. Stainless shoud be ok i think.

Its more as a protection for the rest of the engne bay, to keep the under bonnet temps down iirc

most stainless steels have a tendency to crack when cooling from high temperatures (which it will ahve with the wrap on)

this is becasue it shrinks alot as it cools quickly, when its open to the air it is cooler, therefore normally doesn't crack unless somethings wrong and its getting seriously hot, becasue the wrap acts as an insulator it means the ,manifold gets quite a bit hotter than noraml, which can help induce stress cracking upon cooling

but then again, it depends on the stainless used, the thickness of material and how it is shaped and designed, as well as the wrap used and temperature it reaches, as well as the cool rate

best bet is to ring or email BTB and find out

Wont this transfer the heat further down the exaust. Coud that cause a problem being under the cabin

Right, this is the reply from BTB :

Firstly make sure that your car is not running lean under load with the improved manifold fitted, it shouldn't but if it is it would certainly lead to increased exhaust gas temperature. It is more likely that the cause is simply that the stainless steel is conducting more heat to the surrounding air. We use 304 stainless steel, which should be able to cope with the elevated temperatures and likely oxidation resulting from wrapping substantially better than mild steel, but it does have a limit as to what it can stand.

So it looks OK to wrap it up winkeye

I've ordered 30M of the 1" wide wrap from Cooltek.
